Decent Reader/companion to desktop app

Sente 6 for iPad is a nice companion app to the desktop version of Sente. At its core, it is a reference library that allows you to keep track of academic citations. The developers provide a cloud sync service that does an excellent job of keeping your library synced over multiple devices, such as your Desktop, laptop, iPad and iPhone.

A major function of the Desktop app is a bibliography generator for your papers: Much like EndNote in days of old. This is extremely valuable as it is aware of innumerable journal bibliography styles.

Both the Desktop and mobile apps allow you to download and attach PDFs, and to make notes in the form of highlighting, annotations, and hierarchical tags. They both are very good PDF readers.

A major weakness of the mobile app is that it is highly prone to crashing while downloading PDFs. As a work around I will often just search for citations, and then download the PDFs later from my Desktop. Unlike the Desktop version, the mobile interface is a little awkward. Typically I use the mobile app as a PDF reader where I can go through and annotate all those papers I've annotated. Or I use it for PubMed searches, knowing I can add any interesting articles to my library for subsequent download.

mobile app is quite useless; not a worthy companion to desktop app

I adore and depend on the desktop app, but find the mobile app to be ... well, awful. Lots of UI improvements have made this at least useful as an on-the-go reader, but NOTHING IS MORE ANNOYING THAN LOSING NOTES, and this app constantly crashes, freezes, and loses laboriously typed notes. Since the notes feature is one of the main features that makes desktop Sente so good, the awfulness and unreliability of the notetaking in the mobile app is a real disappointment.

Everything else works as expected. It's fine for reading on the go (again, if you don't take notes while you read) and for looking up publication details on references already in your collection. Syncing is solid, if a bit on the slow side.

If the notes feature WORKED, this would be a 4-star app. As it stands, if you want to take notes (and not just type them out for the sheer joy of exercising your fingertips, but have them safe and available to you at a later time) this app is not what you need.

I usually end up typing all the notes in ANOTHER app and copy/pasting them into the notes fields when I return to my desktop. Hopefully not what the developer intended. :(

Crash prone - don’t update if you have older version

I was a beta tester for the iPad app when they first came out with Sente 6.7 for desktop. I haven’t used the app for almost a year now but needed to for work again. I’m having more issues with the iPad app now than I did as a beta tester. I don’t know what happened but the latest version is unusable. It won’t open files most of the time and if it does it crashes after a minute or so. I’ve tried removing the app and re-installing, which required re-syncing the entire library in the process. No luck. I will be posting on the support section of their website which they have been responsive to in the past. I just wanted to warn people not to update if they currently are using an older/decently stable version.
