What's New in Version 5.3.2
In this update:
• We fixed some minor bugs
• Showtimes is iOS 9-ready!
• We have also discontinued updates for iOS 5 and iOS 6
I've been using this app for years now, and I always thought it was the best. The design isn't jarring, it's easy to use, and it's got just enough (but not too many) features: you can search by location, it shows ratings from Rotten Tomatoes and Flixster, it offers a synopsis of the movie, and most of the time you can watch a trailer in-app. I didn't really care that the in-app trailers were often buggy and sans sound. Whatever. I can google.
But lately this app has stopped working at its most basic level. It gives me the correct showtimes earlier in the day, but as I get closer to the evening showtimes, it switches times and gives me inaccurate info. So, for example, my 7:40 showtime that I came back to double check says it's actually at 9:30 now, though the time hasn't changed at the movie theater and there is no 9:30 show, only the original 7:40 one. This is infuriating. What's the point of a movie showtimes all that gives you the wrong times?
TL;DR: It's not reliable at the most basic level. Do not recommend.
I used to like this app - but this version is plagued by mismatched movie titles and photos. The film name seems to be correct, but the image accompanying it is wrong - and then when I select the film the description is for the film in the image - not the film title in the listing. A very serious and confusing flaw. It seems to be happening mostly in the revivals and foreign films at the smaller cinemas - exactly the ones I am most interested in. I appreciate that I don't get assaulted with unwanted ads and trailers with this app. I sometimes find the geographical listing of the theaters a bit screwy - I live in Brooklyn, but theatres in NJ and manhattan often times show up earlier in the list that ones actually closer to my home. I really wish I had an option to designate favorite theaters to appear at the top of the list and also wish I could do the same with films - having a "top films on my List" feature would be very useful.
Easy to use buy flawed
For ease of use, this app would rate five stars. Open it up and in no time I'm looking at showtimes by movie or location. But, too often, there are problems with the listings. For example, last night I wanted to see when The Peanuts Movie was going to play today. I was careful to select the right date, and was surprised that it wasn't going to be playing at many places nearby. This morning I double-checked, and sure enough, the listings now showed two nearby theaters that were missing when I'd checked the night before. Also, showtimes don't show AM or PM. Most of the time you can tell anyway, but say a movie is showing at 9:30 and 9:45 - as is the one in interested in. It's really hard to tell if that time is AM or PM. (Yes, the theaters around me have early showings.)
