Signal - Private Messenger

By Open Whisper Systems

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

Privacy is possible, Signal makes it easy.
Using Signal, you can communicate instantly while avoiding SMS fees, create groups so that you can chat in real time with all your friends at once, and share media all with complete privacy. The server never has access to any of your communication and never stores any of your data.

• Say Anything - Signal uses an advanced end to end encryption protocol that provides privacy for every message every time.

• Open Source - Signal is Free and Open Source, enabling anyone to verify its security by auditing the code. Signal is the only private messenger that uses open source peer-reviewed cryptographic protocols to keep your messages safe.

• Be Yourself - Signal uses your existing phone number and address book. There are no separate logins, usernames, passwords, or PINs to manage or lose.

• Group Chat - Signal allows you to create encrypted groups so you can have private conversations with all your friends at once. Not only are the messages encrypted, but the Signal server never has access to any group metadata such as the membership list, group title, or group icon.

• Fast - The Signal protocol is designed to operate in the most constrained environment possible. Using Signal, messages are instantly delivered to friends.

• Speak Freely - Make crystal-clear phone calls to people who live across town, or across the ocean, with no long-distance charges.

I like Wickr better

First of all, why can't I text in landscape mode? Why won't the screen orientation shift with me?
Why can't I set up my notifications NOT to display the contents of my messages with the notification?
Why can't I set up messages to auto delete after a time?
While it's great to have encryption, in my real life I have a much more probable risk of a shoulder surfing co worker or a nosey lover looking at my phone than the government.
This feels like the VHS versus Beta fight where the lesser technology won because of the network effect. I'm only using this because my friends insist. To me it seems like a false sense of security will lull all too many to discussing things via text that Reggie shouldn't, only to have a treasure trove of evidence readily available should anyone get their mitts on the unlocked phone.

Quite good for private messaging

Being able to unlink the chrome App from the phone is great, as is the ease with which conversations can be deleted. I've found voice to be a bit spotty, but sending pictures also works great.

I would like for the phone number of the person you are chatting with to not be displayed next to their name. Other than that I think the app is just short of perfect.

Good for keeping the Illuminati from reading my texts

The Reptilians have been tracking my correspondence for the last 7 years, so the dual encryption is nice. I mean, I really only ever text about meeting up for margaritas, but still, even if the alien overlords can't crack the stock texting app, I'm convinced a few of my family members are on their payroll. Minus one star for not having landscape mode.
