Love love love Simple
If it weren't for Simple, I'd be horrible at managing my money and over drafting right before every paycheck. The goals and safe to spend are such an amazing feature. I look forward to payday so I can sort all of my money into my goals (or envelopes as I like to call them). They don't seem as quick to respond as when I joined a year ago..not super long, but not as quick. This is only for the chat part, every time I've had to call someone answers. The app though doesn't correctly figure out the category for your charges which can be annoying. I've bought gas before and the transaction says "gas" in it and they label it as a money transfer...other than that never really had any issues with the app or service. The other big issue that was a pain was they changed the company they used for banking. Everyone had to get new bank account numbers and cards. It was a pain, but they made the process really easy and the app helped. If it weren't for the fact that this is seriously the only good way I've been able to manage my money and actually save and not over draft I would've changed...but that safe to spend and goals features has won my financial heart.
Awesome customer service
They needed to transition bank providers and helped me every step of the way. First of all, LOVE that there is a text messaging service right in the app--no need to wait on hold on the phone!! (But if you do want to call--they have a phone icon right in the corner to tap, no need to go searching for it or type in the number!) Whenever questions popped up I sent them via in-app message and they were answered within a few hours and were always polite and told me exactly what I needed to know. The specificity of instructions was exactly what I needed. I have actually been using Simple for a few years now and enjoyed it but had such good customer service the past couple weeks that it prompted me to write a review. Never had a problem depositing a check with the app. I live in New England and never had any problems finding a Simple-backed no-fee ATM (there's a locator, again, right in the app.) Love love love using Simple with no fees, and I even make interest on my checking account which I have never encountered at any other bank.
The good and the bad...
... based on my experience.
Very simple as the name implies. I used it mostly for some auto payments and for goals, which is an awesome feature. Not having a physical branch didn't bother me because Simple wasn't my primary bank account. I also never had any fees charged to my account.
A few months ago they changed their partnering bank so I had to go through the process of changing account number, routing number and debit card. Aside from the temporary hassle that goes with that, once complete that was done and dealt with... no biggie.
A few weeks later I started seeing several transfers to and from my own accounts (from Simple to my other bank account and vice versa). I know I did not do those. It seemed like they were creating the transfers themselves as most of them were under $1, and sometimes under $2. When I reached out to them, they first told me my account was hacked and forced me to change my user name and password, which I did.
The following day, however, I got a message that my account had been compromised and they would have to close it altogether. And in that same message they were "sorry to say" that they were unable to offer me a new account at the time. Yep, just like that.
Summary, it was an ok experience overall, but I'm glad I never made them my primary bank account. And given the latest troubles I'm not sure I'll be eager to go back if they were to offer me a new account in the future.
