Excellent For Overseas

I've been an occasional Skype user for many years, but recently spent several months overseas. I maintained a working relationship with my clients through Skype or FaceTime-whichever they preferred or had access to. I really like my Apple devices, but Skype hands-down has been more reliable, and clearer than FaceTime--and FaceTime by its nature must be from Apple device to Apple device. I was sold on Skype and have gotten all but two FaceTime users to get Skype accounts. THEN I recently decided to put a little credit on my Skype app, so I could try the calling cell phones or land lines feature (while overseas, I experienced a family emergency and very much needed to communicate with my family at all hours of the day…). For like 2.3 cents per minute or something, the Skype app on my phone communicates with any cell phone or landline flawlessly! While even an excellent Skype to Skype audio or video call still has occasional hiccups, flickers, or slight interruptions, the Skype calling feature has been pristine and perfect so far. Thank you Skype! And PS: I've found the tablet or phone apps much simpler and easier to use than a computer program. I would strongly recommend trying to use Skype on a smart phone or tablet.

Love Skype for staying in contact with home from overseas

I've been using Skype since it first came out decades ago. The call quality is great, and it's a wonderful way to see and talk to my kids when I'm traveling halfway around the world... Much cheaper than making traditional voice calls, and my family and I get to see as well as talk to each other... The only limitation is that I usually have to use a VPN on top of skype... Many of the Internet service providers outside the US block VOIP calls or throttle down VOIP traffic to unusable level when they recognize it.

My only gripe is that the interface is not 100% intuitive: for example, to make a call to a contact in my iPhone's contact book, I have to tap the call number icon in skype, then the keypad icon, AND THEN the phone book icon... tapping directly on the local contacts (phone book) icon from the Skype home screen only allows me to send an invitation to a contact to join skype and doesn't allow me to call them. A star off for the round about way of allowing calls to people in my phone's address book.

That said, Still love Skype after all these years.

A communications godsend

I have commented numerous times on Facebook thanking the creators of Skype. When I was growing up in the early 60s I recall my parents having to wait 2-4 hours for an available international phone line when they wanted to talk to my grandmother in England (I grew up in the USA). Not only were they stick at home waiting for the operator to call them when the line was free, but they also paid plenty for the privilege of talking for 5 minutes. Now about 50 years later I am able to call my wife while she's traveling internationally and with the app we can speak (and see each other) while either (or both) of us is on a train or bus, walking around town etc. It also lets me stay in touch easily with family and friends around the world without having to
worry about costs drowning me. Thanks, Skype!
