Description

Talk to friends in another language, even if neither of you can speak it! Slated translates while you type into your choice of over 80 languages! It can also translate what your friends send back to you in that language, instantly.

As seen on TechCrunch, LifeHacker, iMore, and more!

Slated is a keyboard extension - it can replace your keyboard in other apps, letting you converse in another language. As you type, it translates into your preferred language. Also, by simply copying any other text that's in that language, you'll see it translated back into yours. So you can and a friend can both type in a foreign language--even if it's foreign to both of you!

"If you’re interested in communicating with someone in real-time in their own language, it’s a fairly small price to pay....We’re nearing the era of the true Babel fish, people, and it’s amazing to watch." - TechCrunch

HOW TO INSTALL THE KEYBOARD:
1. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards
2. Add New Keyboard...
3. Choose Translation - Slated and enable Full Access*

*Rest assured, no data of any kind is stored or shared by Slated. Translations use network access for Google services, and are bound by their terms of service and privacy policy. This is machine translation, in order to be in real time, so don't expect perfect, native colloquialisms and diction as if it were from a native speaker! It is a great way to get your meaning across if you don't speak the language, and a different way to learn vocabulary!

HOW TO USE SLATED:
● From your normal keyboard, press and hold the bottom left button (usually a globe or smiley), and select Slated from the list
● Once visible, choose the language you want to translate to by tapping the ... button
● Type anything, and tap the translation that shows up to replace your text
● If you want to "reverse translate" text, just copy it and it will show up translated just above the keyboard buttons

Brilliant idea but poor execution

The Golden Touch

Nice concept. It's useful. However it's sloppy to use. And I dread using it. Mainly, it doesn't have predictive text. You have to type with precision and that's hard to do on an iPhone. Otherwise your text will be riddled with typos that can be recognized for translation. Next, it doesn't recognize your shortcuts for typing long words. These shortcomings makes communicating with the keyboard very inefficient. It's almost easier to type what you want in a translation app, copy and paste into chat. If they can fix these UI issues, the app would be golden.

Works Well for Me

TheRealKMR

Not sure… maybe it is English based… but it is working for me. Tried English to Spanish and English to Korean. Both worked really well. It also allowed me to go from both Spanish and Korean back to English (just had to "copy" the reply and the translation automagically appeared). Works as advertised (as far as I'm concerned). Brilliant!

No Reverse Translation!

Darth Ridiculous

I should've read the reviews, which normally I do. I'm a scholar whose current project involves working with documents written in Albania. Translating into Albanian is useless to me. I needed it to translate FROM Albanian INTO English. If can do the one then it can do the other—or rather *could*, had the developer merely enabled it. Dude, c'mon.

Further, as at least one reviewer has pointed out, the app requires both parties in a conversation to know English. And why would they use the app instead of simply using English?

Developer really didn't think this one through.
