Time to leave Slingbox
I used my Slingbox Pro for years - on Macs, PCs, iPhone, and iPad - from another room in my home and remotely over the Internet. Since a recent update of the iPad and iPhone Slingplayer, it does not work. It now tells me that the Slingplayer version installed on my iPhone is not compatible with my iPhone, and that I must upgrade. A similar message appears on my iPad. Mind you, these are updated apps that installed automatically! I looked in the App Store, and saw that there is a free new version. Of course, that version only works with newer Slingboxes. I am reasonably sure that if I buy the latest non-free version (by the way, I already bought Slingplayer once), it will not work, either. So I have a perfectly good Slingbox Pro, and no way to use it. I am now in the position that, in order to get back to the old functions I had, I must not only buy a new version of Slingplayer, but a new Slingbox, as well. The Slingbox ads all say that all mobile apps are free, when what they mean is, "free as long as you put up with ads". That is an insult and seems to smell like, "bait and switch", to me. It is especially insulting to those of us who PAID for the mobile app once already! With all the other low cost devices available, I need to say goodbye to Slingbox. Is there a way to rate 0 stars?
Great product (after a few tweaks)
Purchased a Slingbox 350HD at a very good price on a sale ($50). I was worried a bit about quality as there is no HDMI...I never should have. This box works great and quality is excellent. We access via iPads and a WDTV box for a big screen at the cabin. The only thing holding back the quality at the cabin is our DL speed there is only 4mbs. We get occasional buffering and a drop in quality. Generally it always works smooth and the ipads are perfect HD.
My reason for dropping from 5 stars is that this product did require some tweaking at the router end. When initially installed we would loose visibility to the Slingbox and continually had to repower it after we got home. Very frustrated at first with the product thinking i made a mistake getting it...It turned out to be some kind of setting (locking the http://) in the router. The solution was easily fixed with the great support folks at Sling however this type of issue should be part of the setup software.
Good...when it works
I bought a Slingbox to save money on my cable since I am a student and never really have time to watch. Most times this app works, but I've had problems with AirPlay connecting pretty often.
In the older version of the app (which I paid for) when trying to connect via AirPlay I'd get errors saying my iPad wasn't connected to the Internet, when it was seemingly being disconnected by the Slingplayer app. With the update to iOS 9 the app seems to constantly stutter when trying to watch over AirPlay. Sure it's nice to watch on my iPad, but I prefer watching content on my tv. Hopefully they fix the issue. It'd also be nice for Slingbox to make good on their promise of letting me get ad free viewing on the new app since I paid for the old one.
