One Gadget to Fit Them All

Whether you use Finale®, Sibelius®, Dorico®, Notion®, MuseScore®, Noteflight® or one of over 200 music programs that support MusicXML files, there is only one desktop app that will let you import your music directly into any or all of them…
Music-to-XML converts PDF music files as well as image files that you’ve scanned or captured with your mobile camera to the standard MusicXML file format.

Recognition takes seconds and is astonishingly accurate. Just select your music file. Everything written to the page is captured: Notation, key and time signatures, lyrics, text, chord symbols, guitar fret diagrams, articulations, dynamics, tempo markings, triplets, spacing and pagination. In just seconds, your score is converted and ready to open in your selected application.

Finale, Sibelius, Dorico and SmartScore® users:
Simply choose your application shown in the output screen. Your application will open and display your entire score as if you just composed it yourself !

Music-to-XML is the only desktop tool you will ever need to import sheet music into you favorite music notation application.

Works but flawed and unsupported

The program basically does what it says, though not without some serious flaws. For one, it's supposed to be able to output directly to Finale. It doesn't. When you click the Finale button, it outputs to nothing. Clicking the "Save as MusicXML" does work, and you simply import into Finale from that file. However, if you're going to advertise that feature, then make it work.

On a more serious note, it doesn't handle complex rhythms at all. When I have a piece of music in 3/4 with four quarter notes over those 3 beats, it just tries to create a phantom 4/4 measure and fixing this becomes something of a nightmare.

Finally, the program seems to be basically unsupported: it hasn't been updated since 2016, and when you go to their site, they say that they only have limited support...by phone, limited hours. For this kind of service, that program should be half the cost, and they should state upfront that they have no intention of updating the app.

Developer Response ,

We do support Music-to-XML. There is an e-mail link provided in the Tips & Hints page. Frankly, there isn’t much to support since M2XML is essentially a “black box”: PDF in -> MusicXML out. But we’re available and ready to respond should questions arise.
Remember...Greyscale and Black and white PDFs only. And be sure no cover pages or tables of content. Music pages only!
Cheers !

Surprisingly effective

I was worried, based on some of the reviews, that I might be wasting my money with this. But I was pleasantly surprised. The first PDF I imported was a moderately complicated choral work. SmartScore did an impressive job translating it. A lot of data, such as rehearsal marks and dynamics, imported perfectly. Tempo was pretty good, though not perfect. When I brought the XML into Finale, every part came up as a piano part. But that was simple to fix. There are really no controls or setting to SmartScore's interface; just an import button. It would be nice if some settings could be tweaked before it exported the XML. But overall, I'm happy with this app. It's going to save me a lot of time I would have to spend re-writing scores I had composed in other software of which I now have only PDFs.

Best $100 I have ever spent on software!

I was really skeptical of this software as I previously owned an early edition of Photoscore that never seemed userfriendly and had a steep learning curve. I open the exact same PDF in SmartScore and Photoscore and SmartScore really nailed the score recognition, the lyrics, the chords and ALL of the text! I’m seriously blown away. As a musician and music teacher I am simply blown away. I also thought that it may be sticky using this software alongside Sibelius but the file opened with ease and without errors.
