Description

Our local star, like you've never seen it before!

This August 21, the Sun and moon will align, giving Americans a front row seat to a rare celestial event. Don't miss a moment with the Smithsonian Solar Eclipse App.

Watch a live NASA stream of the eclipse as it travels across the continental United States, calculate your view with our interactive eclipse map and get a virtual view in our eclipse simulator. While you wait, check out some of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's solar research and get even closer to the sun with near-live views from space.

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) is one part of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, where leading astronomers ask, test, and answer some of humanity’s greatest questions.

Since 1890, SAO has conducted solar research, including the study of solar radiation and the solar constant.

Today our telescopes and instruments send back high resolution images of the Sun and other data to study phenomena including how the solar atmosphere is energized, the topology of solar features, and space weather, to name just a few. During the 2017 solar eclipse, SAO’s AIR-Spec instrument will ride along a unique aircraft built for scientific research in order to measure plasma emission from the sun.

Our solar research is more than a century in the making, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

The Smithsonian Eclipse app was made possible by a grant through the Smithsonian Women's Committee (SWC). SWC supports the Smithsonian through volunteer fundraising, grant awards, and public relations.

Total Joke

All day today, I counted on your app to do what it said! It really does not deserve 1 star... yesterday I payed with the app all day, learning how to use it. So today I was prepared... we had our location picked out and everything planned... I had my iPhone charged and our services were good! So away we went! But when I started to try to access the app I thought it was my phone at first!!! But then I closed all apps including yours... then shut down my phone in a hard reset. Waited for 5 minutes then turned phone back on... but to my dismay, the app would open and the first screen shot would come up, then after that the screen would go black with a turning g wheel in the middle like it was trying to work, but after a minute of that the app would shut itself down!! I have tried since 7:30 am this morning, to no avail!!!! Totally disgusting. We were all ready at our destination sooo... no time to get another app! Just great! Thanks for your app that did not even come on today.

Developer Response

Despite our best efforts, there were some slow service periods on eclipse day (independent of poor cellular coverage in some areas) for which we sincerely apologize. We were overwhelmed by the response and while our servers managed to keep up most of the time, many of the services that we relied on (e.g. timezone services, contact times, nws forecast) were pushed to the point of breakage.
At the peak there were thousands of server calls per second, enough for us to crash the National Weather Service API server. In the last hours before the eclipse alone, our apps were downloaded over 500,000 times.

We planned backups to backups, increased capacity as the apps popularity grew but in the end it wasn't enough. We really fought hard to have the best app experience possible. We've learned lessons too and will continue to improve the app for the next eclipse event.

I hope you still managed to enjoy the eclipse. Please get in touch with us so we can make it up to you at eclipseapp@simcur.zendesk.com

Thank you

Sadly the map wasn't working

Updating my review following the recent eclipse. It was afterward that it became apparent that the servers were overloaded. I wish I had been thinking of the event earlier and used the app to its best before many thousands of people (like myself) hopped on just a few hours beforehand. Yeah, it didn't work much at all at the time of the eclipse, but a few million cell phones looking for information will probably do that

Good app

I'm disappointed that the Smithsonian doesn't create more apps like this. I would fairly enjoy a plentiful of educational apps on a varied of scientific and historical topics that have the simplicity yet the clarity of understanding what is being said and/or told. Easy and useful app, I hope to see more (world war 2 hint hint) apps which interactive maps and easy to get information like this.

Thank you for the review and suggestions for future apps!
