A unique guide for solving the cryptic crossword written by Simon Martin 'Enigma' of the Daily Telegraph.
Have you ever been put off by the numerous lengthy tomes on ‘How to Solve the Cryptic Crossword?’, then this straightforward 14-page guide, ideal for both beginners and as a prompt for more seasoned solvers, is for you. Ideal for commuters and travellers alike whether by train, plane or ship.
Perhaps surprisingly, there are really only 8 main types of cryptic clues; however, things become much more interesting and difficult if 2 or more of the clueing techniques are put together in 1 clue : more about that later! First, each clue should contain a definition/indicator and an answer; it is being able to identify these two component parts that is the key to solving the cryptic clue.
The chapters included in this guide are:
Additions and Deletions
Camouflaging (hidden words)
Cryptic (double definitions etc)
Homonyms (homophones, puns)
Reversals (across and down)
Other tricks of the compilers
Meanings and phrases

Helpful, but brief
I love challenges and have just discovered cryptic crosswords. This guide was helpful to me... A beginner. It has a list of words that suggest letters/abbreviations at the end, but the list is not very long. The lists of words which suggest a certain types of clues are extremely short, and I found online guides that are more inclusive (I wanted something I can use offline). Longer lists in ABC order would be helpful to true beginners. An anagram solver could be something they can thing about adding as well. If you know the different types of clues in cryptic puzzles already, then this will not be helpful to you, because it is so brief. Also, definitely not worth two dollars... It has VERY little actual information.
Also, it does work on iPad in smaller window or low-res like other iPhone apps. It is made for the iPhone, but doesn't crash iPad (hence the three stars instead of two.)
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
