Great until recent update
I’m sad to write this review because of how much I used to love Sonos. I’ve been collecting Sonos for over five years, and have absolutely loved it. I would tell anyone who would listen that it’s my favorite material posession, and totally worth the money. The controller app was so simple and intuitive that my 4 year old could use it, and so well designed that my focus was only on what I wanted to listen to, not the app itself. I used to be able to choose or switch rooms, change artists or playlists for individual rooms with a minimum amount of actions.
A recent controller update changed all of that. Now it is such a clumsy process changing music in any room. Sometimes I try to switch rooms, and the previous room won’t stop playing. There are more frustrating glitches I could list, but the bottom line is what was once an elegant design is now frustrating and actually gets in the way of the system. I’m not sure why they made the changes. The previous controller was not just fine, it was just about perfect.
I waited over a month of constant use before posting this review in case I just needed to get used to the changes, but I’m still unhappy with the change. Sonos is a wonderful company that has done so many things extremely well, so I remain optimistic that if they get enough feedback they will improve the controller design. I miss being able to wholeheartedly tell others that they need to buy Sonos products!
Music streaming and more
I am an acoustic fogey: I like my mostly old CDs, and was devastated when Sony discontinued their carousel CD storage players. I wanted to be able to access my own CDs and play them in any order or combination. I wanted at least CD quality sound, and better if I could get it. I heard about Sonos from a stereo store salesman and bought the equipment necessary to play music through my stereo system. The streaming function works well enough, but storing and playing my own CDs took a large effort, involving ripping all my CDs to an external hard drive and encouraging my home wifi network to recognize that hard drive. Sonos tech support was greatly helpful in this, and I think they are the best tech support people I've ever encountered. The personal time it has taken to rip over 500 CDs is, however, substantial and painful. Yes, I know there is at least one commercial outfit that will do it for you, but the price is out of reach for me. I now have completed this task, and it works. It actually works pretty well. The Sonos system includes an indexing program, which works OK, but is maybe a little clunky. Genre classification is iffy. I needed a while to learn the ripping software, and I'm not sure I've really got it down a hundred percent, but it works. Old CDs can be problematic, in that they did not/do not have the identifiers which more recent ones have, and which indexing programs mostly rely on. I have only good things to say about Sonos overall.
Work around for 9.0?
I’ve been a Sonos user since very early on. I have two Play:1 speakers that I use as a stereo pair. I was very disappointed when the v9.0 update, which apparently enabled Air Play on the One (plus other current models), disabled the home screen controls for those of us using the legacy speakers. I’ve also experienced the same as others where the last ~20 seconds of each track would be cut off when I was playing from a locked iOS device. I keep nearly all my audio on my iPhone & iPad and generally play straight from those devices’ libraries instead of from my Mac, as the latter spends most of its time in sleep mode.
Surprisingly I just accidentally got the lock screen controls re-enabled and the end-of-track cutoff seems to have gone away. For some reason one of my speakers dropped off the system and I couldn’t get it to reconnect, so I did a full-on controller reset on my iPhone. I also unplugged both speakers and then basically set my system back up, as if it was new. No idea why, but like I said this has caused the end-of-track dropout to go away and my lock screen controls to come back (even though Sonos says explicitly in their release notes that this function has gone away for those without Air Play compatible speakers).
Very weird, but now my system’s back to how I’ve used and loved it for the past 6-7 years and it’s great! Hopefully some others might try this and have some luck getting full functionality back.
