Explore the surprising side of sound with Sound Uncovered, an interactive book featuring auditory illusions, acoustic phenomena, and other things that go bump, beep, boom, and vroom.
From the makers of Color Uncovered—the Exploratorium—this app puts you at the center of the experiment: Hear with your eyes, see with your ears, make and modify recordings, test your hearing, and more.
How do you make a saxophone growl? Are there secret messages in music played backward? Why does the sound of gum chewing drive some people mad? Listen up and find answers to these questions and more as you take an auditory trip to the place where sound gets truly interesting: the space between your ears.
Find more to explore from the Exploratorium online at www.exploratorium.edu. Better yet, visit us in person at our new home at Pier 15 in San Francisco, California.
***Tip for users with sound playback issues: make sure the side switch on your iPad is not set to mute. (This is separate from the volume control.)

So exciting and interesting!
Each new slide of this app taught me something interesting and kept me on my toes. I had many questions answered about sound and perception and now am inspired to learn more! I went through each slide, but am going to keep the app because I definitely will not get sick of this and will enjoy showing it to friends. I'll definitely be sure to go to the Exploratorium in Sam Francisco one day!
I like this one!
(By R, age 6): This is a nice app, but they have a lot of old fashioned things in it, like a tape recorder. I wonder when it was made? I learned some things from this, and I like Exploratorium apps. They also have another one called Color Uncovered. My favorite part of this app is Maim That Tune. Mom doesn't remember the name of the audio-visual one, but that's her favorite. You should get this.
This is a wow-er!
Even as an acoustics major in college, I found this app to be impactfully demonstrative of the basic principles of sound and how important it is in our life - and how incredibly ignorant most of us are. A wonderful way to discover the world of acoustics!
