If you're going to do this type of game then do something unique. There's a million games exactly like this. I mean you could make the space ships cats or or something and it at least it would be slightly different.
But the main issue is the controls. I had to hold the phone above me to accurately move my ship. Let me tell you; you get funny looks if you play this game in public. Also just tapping the screen to fire blocks your vision of the approaching enemies. My suggestion would be to make semi transparent controls on the bottom (or adjustable placement) and leave the gyro control in the options as a different way of controlling if the user wants.
But really just replace the graphics with unique ones like floating gorillas and your shooting bananas and that's a start.
You already have the coding done just replace those graphics otherwise this is the most banal game I have played and I've played about 100 in the past month (got one of those "find free apps" apps). But unique graphics and fixed controls will make it actually stand out and not feel so boring. No offense, but you had to know this had been done before. Another option would be to go sleek black and white with a wispy feel to all the enemies and your ship. That's just a batch photoshop job to your source graphics. That's my 2¢
Got hooked first time I played. Very addictive. Just wish there were bosses
