Description

Space Gremlin is a simple app to help you clean up your hard drive and recover wasted space. It provides you with a "big picture" treemap view of your file system and lets you quickly determine which files or folders are taking up too much room. Delete all those unwanted gremlins eating up space!

I like this app

Works on my desk top HD too. Works fast. Nice visual to SEE where files are and sizes of the files.

Wish list:

1) Be nice to drill deeper to ID specific files within a group. Oops, just discovered it does drill one level down. Would like it to go even deeper and ID each file. Oops, just found out it does this too. Just had to click on individual squares.

2) Would like it to rate activity of a file group AND activity within a file group. Yes, how often it's used. And last usage. This would help me rate it at a glance.

3) A video explaining this app would be nice. As is, learning this app comes with the old standby: click and see what happens.

That said: I really like this app. It visualizes the space on your hard drive. So you can SEE what's where and how big it is.

It gives YOU "Gestalt Eyes" - MEANING: you see each part & size that makes the whole enchilada.

Fantastic, apparently I had two copies of my itunes folder...

This app helped me free up 50GB of space from my mac which i had somehow used up by making a totally unnecessary copy of my itunes library from about a year and a half ago. Easy to use, simple, easy controls. Visual representation is easy to understand and really puts everything in perspective for you.

I have two small suggestions for improvement:
Make a keyboard shortcut for the "Zoom Back" button.
Allow for Folder comparisons which would find the differences in the files. For example, I had an older second copy of my music folder, and I wanted to compare it to the newer folder to make sure there were no files that were accidentally placed in the older folder, but not in the new folder. This would be a fantastic addition to an already stellar app.

Fast, Effective, & Powerful

Regarding visualized space usage, this kind of square map approach is my favorite (like the old SpaceMonger for PC). After trying many others, I find that this method remains one of the most effective ways to locate and identify large data sets. I have used similar tools for years to help clients understand where things are on their computers, and how they relate to each other within the filesystem. Space Gremlin's 'Zoom to Folder' is a solid feature that I expect to use quite a bit.

It's great to see such a well-implemented (and well-priced) Mac application for tackling this fundamental task. Well done, and thanks for letting this Gremlin loose!

Update 1.2:

Thanks for integrating the 'Move to Trash' and 'Compress' functions -- they will be most helpful. Keep up the good work!
