A solid application with room to grow

I still have yet to find an email client I truly like for the Mac, but the reason I keep coming back to Spark is its reliability—Spark consistently notifies me of new email well before any other mail app I’ve tried. It also boasts a number of “smart” features (e.g., its search, Smart Folders, and Smart Inbox) that make email management quick and easy. I particularly love the Smart Inbox, which lets you “pin” emails to the top and shows unread messages above all others—this non-chronological organization of emails feels incredibly natural and makes the things you care about most easily accessible.
However, for the power user, Spark is a bit lacking. Its composer is one of the most bare-bones I’ve ever used, and doesn’t even have support for changing text font, let alone Markdown or HTML. Spark has no support for read receipts, link tracking, or really any other kind of analytics tools. Another huge ommission is the lack of customizable Mail Rules. Moreover, the app is quite lacking in terms of customization in general—this is likely to be an app you either love or hate. That said, it is a reliable, intelligent mail app that’s free and worth trying out.

Baby Bear’s porridge

Update (23 May 2017): Search results are still poor (see below). You can only print the most recent message in a conversation and not the entire conversation thread.

Update (13 Dec 2016): I have an Exchange account with more than 11,000 archived messages and there seems to be an issue with caching/downloading all of these messages. As a result, search results are poor. Spark showed two results for my search term and the stock Mail app showed 47 when looking in my archive folder. Sad to say, I cannot use Spark at this point and hope they work this out.

Like the iOS version, Spark for Mac is the perfect blend of features and minimalism…not too bloated, not too busy. There’s a few bugs here and there, but overall it’s a very polished first release. I was happy to see Exchange support from the start, unlike other mail clients whose developers say “it’s coming soon." Frankly, I’m surprised that it’s free and I contacted the co-founder to ask about donating to the group. The Readdle developers produce high-quality software, provide timely support, and update their apps frequently. Hats off to the Readdle team.

Almost perfect

Was a devoted Mailbox (by Dropbox) user; then tried Polymail, but they switched to a proprietary model. Even when back to Apple Mail for a while but really missed the wide variety of swipe quick actions and especially missed the “postpone” feature. All of that is present in Spark (using on Mac/iPhone/iPad mini). Works well with both Gmail and my Exchange (university) email and presents it in an unified interface. The Smart inbox organizes things perfectly. Missed out on getting 5 stars because the search function is slower and buggier than I like. Also, every once in a while, when checking email on the iOS version, the app hangs for an inordinate amount of time to retreive the email. Finally, I wish there was an option to turn off the automatic signature suggestions.
