Exclusive to macOS, SpeedScriber brings affordable, insanely fast and amazingly accurate automated transcription right to your desktop.

Pricing starts at US$0.50/minute for purchases of 30-120 minutes with discounts for larger purchases.

Never wait hours or days for transcripts again. With good quality audio, SpeedScriber delivers transcripts at a speed and accuracy you won't believe. A 60 minute file is typically transcribed in less than 10 minutes.

Uses industry-leading automatic speech recognition technology for accurate transcripts with timestamps (or timecode if present). Supports Dutch, English (Australian/British/North American accents), French, German, Italian and Spanish languages with detection of different speakers.

Use audio or video files from Finder or drag a Final Cut Pro X library to the SpeedScriber icon for import of clips (audio/video/sync/multicam/compound). Choose which audio channels should be used in the file for the best quality transcription. Click the Transcribe button and grab a coffee while we work some magic.

SpeedScriber's unique and innovative interface makes it the fastest way to make punctuation and word corrections to the transcript. As the file is played, the current word is highlighted in orange. Click on any word to position the media file to that word. Add and edit speaker names with choice of nine colors so you can easily distinguish one speaker from another. Save custom words so they can applied elsewhere in the transcript with just a single click.

SpeedScriber supports printing of transcripts and export to PDF, plain text, Avid Media Composer script format, Final Cut Pro X XML and Word (.docx). For captioning purposes you can export to Avid DS caption format, iTunes Timed Text and SubRip (.srt). If you use Adobe Premiere Pro CC, we have that covered too with the SpeedScriber panel (free download available separately).

PLEASE NOTE: As an internet-based service, SpeedScriber requires creation of a free online account. 15 minutes will be added to your account when your email address is verified. Additional minutes can be purchased at any time. Final Cut Pro X integration requires version 10.3 (or later). SpeedScriber panel for Premiere Pro requires 11.1, 12.0.1 or 12.1 versions. MXF media files are supported if you have the Apple Pro Format codecs installed, which require Compressor, Final Cut Pro or Motion.

What's New

Version 2.0.1

– FIX: Various word editing errors in French language.
– FIX: Continue button wasn't always enabled when entering temporary password (after requesting password reset).

– NEW: Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish languages are now supported in addition to English. Editing controls are configured automatically according to conventions for the currently open file. NOTE: Currently the UI is only available in English. Localisation of UI for supported languages is planned for a future update.
– NEW: Word editing has been totally rewritten under the hood with particular impact on estimated timings of new words. It is now far more sophisticated than it was previously and copes much better with adding missing words in transcripts.
– NEW: Regular/Large font size for transcript display in Preferences.
– NEW: Small/Regular/Large font size for transcript export in Preferences.
– NEW: Left and right panels in Transcript mode are now resizable.
– NEW: Custom words panel allows saving of single or multiple words at the file or account level which can be used again in the transcript with a single click. Saving a custom word to the account level will make it accessible for any file on your account — particularly useful for specialist terms or names that are used regularly. Custom words can be managed at any time with the ability to add, delete and copy words between file and account levels.
– NEW: Timecode data embedded in mp3 files as artist and album tags (by recordings made on Sound Devices hardware) is now supported.
– NEW: Viewer now resizes according to aspect ratio of media file. In previous versions, all video files were shown within 16:9 container.
– NEW: Export to Avid DS Caption format.
– NEW: Export to iTunes Timed Text (.itt) format for use with Final Cut Pro X 10.4.1 (or later).
– NEW: Export to Word (.docx).
– NEW: Final Cut Pro X compound clips are now supported.
– NEW: Final Cut Pro X libraries can now be dropped on the imported files list as well as the app icon.
– NEW: Final Cut Pro X export in all modes now creates a new keyword range on paragraph breaks.
– NEW: Holding the Option key when clicking Files button, or choosing View > Files will switch to the Files screen and change the status of the current file to "Verified". The keyboard shortcut for this is Option-Command-1
– NEW: Holding down Shift key at launch disables auto log in.
– CHG: Search panel has been moved into a tab to accommodate the new custom words panel.
– CHG: Search now matches on complete rather than partial words. e.g. In previous versions, searching for "the" would show matches for "the", "their", "they" etc. In this version, only matches for "the" will be shown. In addition, wildcard characters are now supported in the search text so entering ? represents any single character and entering * represents multiple characters.
– FIX: Improved search results where the found word is close to another found word.
– FIX: Uppercase characters are now valid in account email address.
– FIX: Various bug fixes and stability improvements.

Let down by irrepairably bad transcription

Wade Tregaskis

The app itself is quite nice, and works pretty well. Though I didn’t really explore the editing & correcting tools, because the transcription on the 15m test file I tried was astoundingly bad. e.g. it identified eleven speakers when there were three. It completely missed some of the opening dialogue. I couldn’t even follow where in the transcript I was w.r.t. listening to the audio file separately, it was so utterly unrelated to what was actually said.

Granted the audio file I tested with wasn’t fantastic quality, but that was rather the point - I don’t always have the luxury of a good mic setup or recording environment. And I could have been far more brutal - it was merely a cheap omnidirectional mic placed on the table in front of the speakers, in a quiet room. I’d hate to think how this tool would handle a recording that actually has background noise.

In fairness I’m yet to find any automated transcription tool or service that’s good enough to be worth using. This one seems a bit worse than others I’ve tried, though, such as Dragon Dictate.

Very Good … love the FCP X round trip!

I’m experienced with quite a few machine based transcription services and SS does a great job with good recordings ( ie pro- level ).

The ability to rapidly upload ( no requirement to transcode video to small sizes ), transcode, correct ( if needed ), mark up and get ranges back into FCP X is astounding! The downside of using local media is that external users ( eg a Producer without access to all the media ) will only get to see the transcription. The Media Player of the app will display “Media Off-Line”. I hope that future developemt will see at least an off-line audio playback included … audio files can be tiny … but incredibly valuable when selecting good takes or interpreting add transcription results ( they are inevitable).

Lightning fast support...

The app gives a free 15 mins or so of transcritopn time … try it out! Its seriously useful ...

A Great Editing Tool

SpeedScriber is a breakthrough piece of software that allows you to review interviews, pick your favorite segments, and then print out just the segments you like—with timecode! The application makes creating transcriptions, editing them, and bringing them into FCPX a very easy process. Most of us have dealt with poor tools for tracking where a particular interview segment is during an edit—with SpeedScriber this is no longer an issue.
