*** Spring sale! 50%-off! *** Spyglass is an essential GPS toolkit for outdoors and off-road navigation. Packed with tools it serves as binoculars, heads-up display, milspec compass with maps, gyrocompass, tactical GPS receiver, waypoint tracker, speedometer, altimeter, Sun, Moon and star finder, gyro horizon, rangefinder, coordinate converter, sextant, inclinometer, angular calculator and camera. It saves your custom places and waypoints, navigates precisely to them later, shows them on maps and using real-time augmented reality displays detailed GPS info, measures distances, sizes, angles, and does a lot more.
COMPASS & GYROCOMPASS
Accuracy improvement techniques, special compass modes and calibration methods available in Spyglass only make it a real instrument – made to military standards it’s the most advanced and accurate digital compass that also supports military units.
FINDER, TRACKER & AR NAVIGATION
Spyglass operates in 3D and uses augmented reality to show real-time object positions, info and directions to them overlaid over camera or maps.
Save current position, add points from maps, manually enter location coordinates and bearings, add stars by hand or use a built-in star catalogue.
Find saved places and objects later simply by following directional arrows.
Spyglass tracks multiple targets simultaneously and shows their info – distance, direction, azimuth, elevation and estimated time of arrival.
Copy, paste and share locations, coordinates and map links using many supported formats.
TACTICAL GPS, SPEEDOMETER & ALTIMETER
Find and track your location and get detailed real-time GPS data – coordinates in dozens of civil and military formats, altitude, course, current and maximum speed, using imperial, metric, nautical and military units.
See your and targets’ positions on maps using different map styles and alternative map providers – plan waypoints and measure distances.
TRACK STARS, SUN AND MOON & NAVIGATE BY STARS
Track positions of stars, Sun and Moon with arc second precision – use them as a reference to calibrate compass for maximum accuracy.
Measure distances to objects in real time with a rangefinder reticle similar to sniper sights.
SEXTANT, ANGULAR CALCULATOR AND INCLINOMETER
Find out heights of objects and distances to them – measure visually and calculate dimensions and distances.
Take pictures overlaid with all available GPS, positional and directional data.

IMPROVED GYROCOMPASS MODE
The gyrocompass mode can now be used as a primary mode. Now in the gyrocompass mode the magnetic sensor is referenced continuously until a manual adjustment to the heading is made using the two finger sliding gesture. Unless the manual adjustment is in effect the app acts as a gyro-assisted magnetic compass.

I’ve had this app, in its various updates, for several years now, and it still is leaving me shaking my head. It’s true that - as some reviewers have said - if you’re in the wilderness and your phone runs out of battery, you would do well to have an old-fashioned iron compass. But this is something far more sophisticated. AR combines bearings, distance measurement (mil scale), fine calibration by position of sun, moon, Polaris…or any of the 100 or so major stars that you can choose. Can be set for magnetic north, true north, “gyro” compass (based on your initialization, just as in aircraft gyro compass), integrates with GPS, stores maps you use once while connected to data.
If this were a stand-alone device, it would come closest to some of the high-end TI scientific calculators, in terms of usability, versatility.
This dev has done some other interesting apps, too, but while they are extremely detailed, this is the most accessible of his projects. But be sure to print out the manual, and (as he suggests) read it a bit at a time, not trying to internalize it at one sitting.
It's a Toy. A very cool Toy.
Works great, gorgeous, well designed. But let's be honest......you're never going to use this thing other than for a cool novelty. No one is wandering into the wilderness with nothing but an iPhone app to navigate them out.....and really no one is wandering into the wilderness period. You're going to pull this thing out and show your hunting buddies how cool it is, or use it to waypoint your way from the bar to the urinal and back. That's why it's so cheap....I bought it just because it looks cool and makes me feel like I can go spelunking. If you claim this is an essential tool to navigate your off-road adventure or next wild camp outing, then you need to get a different hobby.
Worthless On iPod Touch 5
Don't get lost with this app on a iPod Touch 5. If you do make sure you are constantly recalibrating it.
Only works in gyrocompass mode on iPod Touch 5. Gyrocompass mode requires that you know the cardinal directions in your location or that you have relatively clear skies, in order to calibrate it. If you know the cardinal directions then you don't need a compass. If you don't have clear skies and don't know the cardinal directions in your location, can't back track, or you're in unfamiliar terrain, then sit down and stay put because you're lost and this app ain't going to help you. Hahahaha!
PLEASE BE AWARE GYROCOMPASS MODE LOSES CALIBRATION WITHIN SECONDS OR A MINUTE OR TWO AFTER THE LAST CALIBRATION. (And does so under normal movement and turns by the user/holder of the device.)
