The Official Star Trek™ PADD (Personal Access Display Device) immerses fans in a rich interactive database of Star Trek™ information and images with an authentic reproduction of the LCARS style interface introduced in the Star Trek: The Next Generation™ series.
The PADD provides access to the official Star Trek™ database from StarTrek.com of aliens, ships, places, technologies, and episodes. The app includes a true reproduction of LCARS, the computer interface commonly used in Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets during the 24th century, and includes familiar computer sound effects and voice.
Features of the Star Trek™ PADD app include:
-Browse or search through the official database of Star Trek™ television series information, including aliens, ships, places, technologies, and episodes
-Rich, immersive LCARS graphical interface, introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation™ television series
-Authentic computer sound effects and voice
-Jump to related information through cross-links to other content
-Read the latest news from the Star Trek™ Facebook page and Star Trek™ Twitter feed
-Enjoy two self-running diagnostic modes with an overview schematic of the U.S.S. Enterprise™ NCC-1701-D
-Voice recognition for searching (Only available on applicable devices)
-Live updates of databank content -- new entries and updated entries appear automatically
Some users have asked why sounds won't always play. This is because the app pays attention to your "mute" switch and the volume on your device. Also, if you have configured the "mute" switch to lock the rotation of your screen, you may "mute" the device in the following manner: Double-press the home button and swipe to the right until you see the visual "mute" button on the screen.
This is the official Star Trek™ app produced for CBS by ArcTouch.
What's New in Version 2.3
Various bug fixes.
Nice but the novelty wears off quick
Initially, this app is pretty cool. After a while, it becomes ho hum. I'm certain the developer put in a ton of work on this and that effort should be greatly commended. Having said that, there are some things that could make this app better.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the random sound effects do become a distraction after a while. I also think that if you are going to simulate a Trek prop by name, you ought to hold true to the spirit of the prop. Case in point: I shouldn't be hearing the PADD make view screen sounds or comm channel effects, and I shouldn't hear the computer voice with each button press.
Overall, I like this app but I doubt I will keep it for long. It really isn't worth $4.99 and I believe the only reason the price is set that high is because the developers know that die-hard Trek fans will pay for it.
Great when used as a reference source!
After reading some of the reviews of this app and getting a few chances to use it I have come to the conclusion that people must be approaching the use of this app regarding it as a game of sorts. From what I've been able to gather this app is more akin to a concentrated, wickedly themed, Wikipedia type resource for most things Star Trek. If you approach this app with the understanding that it is a information resource first and foremost then I believe you will enjoy it as much as I do. It was well worth the money I spent on it.
Now that I've had a chance to look at the app with a more critical eye I'm in a better place to provide objective feedback. At this point the only thing I would really change is the random beeping. Even just a toggle setting to disable the random beeps would be great. I want it to make sound only when I touch it please.
This app is very much deserving of five stars if the random beeping stops.
