Addictive, guilty pleasure!
This one of the better game apps for the iPhone that I've downloaded. It really captures the feel and nostalgia of the Star Trek universe. It's simple to learn and reasonably challenging to master. Think, Sim-City in a star ship...with character development and story lines. Like most games, in-app purchases can speed up progress but they are certainly not necessary for an immersive and thoroughly satisfying experience.
My 11 year son, who has never seen Star Trek, watched me play it and thought the simple character graphics were cute, the ships cool, and the music exciting, so he downloaded it for himself (on his iPod 5). The variety of ships, uniforms, games-within-the-game, has him coming back to this app day after day. It wasn't long before he wanted to sit down and watch episodes of TOS, animated Trek, DS9, etc. I grew up on TOS (I'm 54) and I never thought my kids would ever be interested in anything other than Star Wars and Halo. This silly little app was the gateway drug my 11 year needed to get hooked into becoming a Trekker in training.
Good bones, minor changes would really make it shine
Nice Star Trek game, I'm pretty early on in the missions but pacing on those feels pretty good, like the building a ship mechanic - could use updating following more recent games with this concept, enjoy there's a mini game that ensures in-game access to the premium resource.
If the devs are listening, here's my wish list:
Change the Skirmish fleet management UI to include an option to scroll between ships as you can with Reserve officers
Change assigning a ship to your fleet becomes a button on the ship details like Remove and clicking on the ship in the Hangar opens the details
Allow me to start building 2 crew quarters per an expansion on later expansions (only halfway there, this might happen)
Let me choose where to expand - would rather finish the saucer before moving on.
Have an option to purchase a random new Officer
Have Exploration missions that ask for a ship from your Fleet instead of officers, uses the assigned Officers' stats. Include at least one minigame in these missions that use the assigned crew.
Ability to manage crew assignments from a menu
Some of these I fully understand might not be in the creators vision, but I really hope the UI/Management changes happen!
Away Team Combat is Buggy, Skirmish Problematic
Overall, the game keeps improving, so kudos for that. That being said...the space combat buttons NEED to be moved. By having them at the top of the screen, when I get a notification, they cover my cards, and I often end up accidentally tapping the notification, disconnecting me from combat and forcing a loss. I shouldn't have to put my phone in Do Not Disturb to play this game.
Also, I'm at a point in the game where to win combat missions, I can't make any mistakes, despite my officer's skills being maxed. But sometimes when the cubes are over an enemy, my phasers fire when I tap the cube. This is especially problematic in space combat. This needs to be fixed. I keep losing missions not because of my skill, but because of the touch sensitivity of the game.
