THE SECRET SAUCE
Start is based on the largest study ever conducted on antidepressant use in the real world. The research says that if you're taking a medication that works for you, you should start seeing improvement by 6 weeks. Start measures your progress with the clinically validated surveys PHQ-9 and PHQ-2, and gives you bi-weekly reports to help you see if you're feeling better.

A huge motivator
I've been dealing with depression for around 8 years and have only tried antidepressants once several years ago. I didn't take them. I've started my new medication and I've found this app to be incredibly motivating. My biggest issue is that antidepressants lack immediate effects and it can be hard to stay motivated when nothing seems to be happening and you're already not even motivated enough to go to the bathroom most days. The app shows a timeline and gives you a brief overview of how the medication should be working week by week which puts your current position in your treatment into perspective by actually showing how close you are to seeing more positive effects. The check ins and data are vital and my only request is that an option for tracking medication side effects be added (unless it's already there and I can't find it which would not surprise me). I also really love that the app has no in app purchases - so many free mental health apps contain some form of them and make me feel like I'm somehow missing out or constantly pester me with ads and pop ups to pay for something when I just want to track my mood. It's a small thing that makes me feel like the app makers have genuinely just tried to help people and it is so appreciated.
A promising app
Start is one of those rare self-help apps that I've actually stuck with as I deal with issues with anxiety, depression and the associated symptoms that I experience. I found after a couple weeks that being able to track when I take my medication is helpful and helps keep me on track. The regular 'check-ins' along with the resulting reports are helping me to identify when I am feeling better or worse.
Where Start needs to improve is to provide support for multiple medications, as well as allow for setting multiple appointments.
Overall I find the app to be a strong start and I look forward to the developer working to address the current shortcomings.
Great idea and might help my Doctor
I've been doing this for only about 2 weeks now but I think it's a great idea! To keep track of how you feel each day, being able to add a mood or feeling is also helpful!
I even asked them a question and I'll be interested in their answer. As time goes on and they add things I believe this app can be of great help to show your Dr how you felt each day and what you did so they can adjust or change your medication ! Good start to a possible really great app for patients and their doctors!
