Andrew Stuart's masterpiece

01 Binar

I use Andrew Stuart's magnificent website all the time to improve my solving technique, i.e. to find spots where I missed a simpler technique and wasted time instead on some Byzantine forcing chain. Grateful thanks to the developer for creating a convenient mobile version of this magnificent training tool. The user interface has improved tremendously since the first versions. My only request is to add the website's ability to un-select certain techniques in the solver's algorithm (or even better, to reorder the techniques). A prime example is 3D Medusa, which is invoked ahead of the unique rectangle (UR) group. Each solver's pattern-matching skills are different; for me, URs their variants are a frontline technique, while 3D Medusa is a last resort. The missing option to select (or ideally reorder) specific techniques is the only thing that prevents me from giving this superb app a full 5 stars.

Having learned a lot from the sudowiki website, I had high hopes for this app. It does have the analysis and hints engine. However, I am disappointed. The user interface is somewhat awkward, causing me to make a lot of silly mistakes such as erasing a note when I meant to set one. It seems like the only pencil mode is that it displays all candidates and you have to clear the ones you can exclude - usually more than are valid! It has a camera capture feature to scan puzzles from printed copy, but so far I haven't gotten a single puzzle scanned without multiple errors.

So much potential

This app needs the ability to import from photos, not just the camera roll. Nothing more frustrating than typing in 81 numbers before realizing you mixed one up and you have to start all over.
