I've been wishing for a calendar app on my phone that is most like my computer iCal, and Sunrise is it for all but a couple of minor issues! It seamlessly synced with my computer iCal through the cloud and my various calendar color labeling transferred exactly. The interface is easy, quick and intuitive. The only minor problem I have with it is that when adding events from my phone I cannot turn off event alerts and the time choice increments are minimal. On computer iCal you can specify any number of hours ahead or after. For example, I can't remind myself first thing in the morning for something 4 hours later if I schedule that event from the phone. The app also has it's own alert ding sounds which are different from iCal. You would have to edit the event from your computer in order to change the alert time and sounds. The red dot date circle on the badge is very easy to see on my home screen. Great job, Sunrise people! Love the cheerful name!
Almost, but not quite...
There's a lot to love about Sunrise-- clean interface, fast syncing, ties into Todoist, Tripit and Evernote. The iPhone version is actually 5 stars, but I had to knock off two stars overall for the lack of an agenda view on the iPad app. There's a somewhat arrogant explanation on their website: "We decided that the agenda view does not make good use of the available space offered by the large screen." But someone neglected to think about the fact that if you're going to pull in tasks & reminders from Todoist & Evernote to your calendar, it's actually useful to see things in a list format. All the other calendar apps-- Outlook, PocketLife, Fantastical-- offer a hybrid agenda view on the iPad, so you can see a list for the day married with a broader week or month view. This option makes sense from a UX standpoint, and I think it's lazy development to allow your features to be driven by internal opinion instead of actual UX. So three stars for the current version which would bump up to five stars if they add a hybrid agenda view to iPad app.
Best Calendar For Me
I have tried just about every calendar app there is and this one works the best for me. I initially had syncing problems with it but those seem to have resolved and may have been my fault in the setup.
This app gives you a great view of your day, the people you will be seeing and the places you will go. I love the integration of other apps like Wunderlist, Linked In, and Trello (a few I use for work) and the Meet feature that easily allows the ability to share your availability. They need to adjust how that is communicated though because I have found that if someone later deletes the appointment, it doesn't seem to let you know like it would a regularly schedule event. But that functionality is still really good.
As silly as this might be, I love the integration of the sports schedules and other calendars. I enjoy various teams and this allows me to easily import their game schedule onto my calendar. Again, not critical but a nice feature.
All in all it provides me with all that I feel like I need. I'd like to see natural entry added as a feature but it's not a must. I'd also like to see better integration of the invites and sharing availability options, but it's hard to complain because they are definitely better than most apps.
I would highly recommend this app to anyone who manages a pretty hectic schedule with lots of "players" as it helps me keep my people straight and my schedule straight.
