★ WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING:
5-Stars — Selected as one of the "Best iPhone Games" by TouchArcade's "2009 Buyer's Guide"
"Just spent some quality time with it, i'm hopelessly in love"
"This game is really worth its price and even more. There are games you pay 5 to 10 bucks for and they aren't nearly as addicting as Sword of Fargoal is. I hadn't more fun with the last RPGs I played."
— Fans from TouchArcade forum
“Sword of Fargoal is one of the best loved roguelike games ever to light up a CRT … Those who've never played a dungeon crawler before might just find themselves drawn in to Sword of Fargoal.”
“Fargoal has been beautifully polished in the visuals department without getting too far from the original game's quirky charm and retro stylings ... It's playable and addictive, perfect fodder for the iPhone / iPod Touch, and certainly one of the best mini-adventures you can get.”

★ TouchArcade.com Says:
In its 1996 anniversary issue, Computer Gaming World listed the game as #147 in the "Top 150 Best Video Games of All Time." It has been inspiration for many dungeon crawlers created since...
It features completely redone graphics utilizing OpenGL ES to add depth to the stony visuals. It allows for pinch-and-spread zoom control to focus on the action at hand and features an optional on-screen mini map to aid in negotiating the twists and turns of each dungeon level.
But, really, what makes the game so well suited for the iPhone is its casual nature as compared to the typical roguelike. And that's not to say the game is shallow or light on dungeon crawling action, but rather I feel it's simply a bit more accessible to the typical gamer than, say, Nethack, Moria, or Rogue thanks to an economy of controls, spells, and the like.

Update to the update!
I'm playing through Sword Of Fargoal for the sixth time now, eagerly anticipating Fargoal 2! I read on here that they're preparing to release Fargoal 2, and I couldn't be more ecstatic. Character classes? New monsters and items and tile sets? And it's free?! Count me in!
Fargoal is a wonderfully ported and semi-updated version of the Commodore 64 classic. Most of the graphics received an overhaul, while things like the sound effects remain true to their C64 roots. People who are saying that this game is just a non-stop grind are completely wrong and are missing the point. Fargoal is more about the experience, the exploration. It's about the thrill of walking through a tunnel in the wall and exploring the crypt on level 7. It's about finding items to help you in your quest for the Sword Of Fargoal. If you can overlook the grind, you'll find a rich and rewarding experience that easily trumps every crappy western and JRPG in the AppStore. If you don't give this one a chance because you don't understand or get the wrong idea, then it's your loss. Fargoal is fantastic, and I can't even imagine how they could make it better with Fargoal 2. Get it now!
I've been playing SoF since the day the iPhone version was released. It is such a great game, and gets even better with every update. Easy to learn, hard to master, even harded to put down! It's a great value as well - 20 dungeon floors (navigable via stairs) with 4 maps per floor (connected via side tunnels), all randomly generated each time you start a new game. Item placement, monster spawns, trap locations, and more, everything is randomized with each new game. Never the same quest twice! The graphics are slick and polished with a hint of retro appeal. The sound effects are true to the game's C=64 origins produced via SID chip emulation. The background music, wow, I love the BGM, so moody and mysterious. Load times are very short, resuming a saved game is easy and brings you exactly where you left off. SoF is not an action game and not a quick-thrill casual game, SoF is a long adventure and if you take the time to get in and learn it, you will be rewarded with many hours of entertainment.
My Favorite iPhone Game. Period.
I can't believe I've never written a review for Sword of Fargoal! This is my favorite iOS game out there! Who knows how many dozens of hours I've poured into it. I used to play it during my breaks at work to escape from everything around me into an adventure, haha. Most of the people who have written some of the more negative reviews simply don't understand the type of game that Fargoal is and don't care to find out.
Sword of Fargoal is what you would call a "roguelike". It is a game about delving deeper and deeper into a deadly dungeon, in search of a mythical sword. You fight monsters, discover items, learn spells, and gain levels. However, the gameplay isn't as much about action as it is about strategy. When your character dies, that's it. You have to make a new character and start from the beginning. It gives the game a very satisfying risk/reward system and obviously a challenging difficulty. The dungeon is randomly generated though, which means TONS of replay value. Each character you make will have a unique experience.
The graphics are very nice and I love the moody music probably above anything else in the game. Also, the controls are another high point. The greatest thing about Fargoal is the sheer level of polish. Sword of Fargoal is a labor of love and it shows. I didn't really like roguelikes before I played Fargoal, now I love them!
Whatever the price is, buy this game.
Can't wait for the sequel!
