System Monitor is an application for the menu bar of OS X, designed to inform you unobtrusively about the activity of your computer. You can retrieve up-to-date technical data any time, like process load, CPU temperature, main memory consumption, storage space, disk activity, communication on network interfaces, etc. By positioning the app in the menu bar, as least screen real estate as possible will be wasted. The program monitors your system continuously and is readily available when you need it.
If desired, System Monitor can also simulate the flickering activity lights of hard drives or network sockets in the menu bar. This is possible either in color or —perfectly integrated into the design of OS X— in inconspicuous black-and-white. PC switchers who miss this feature on Macintosh computers can easily retrofit this function with System Monitor.
What's New in Version 1.42
- This version ensures full compatibility with the color display schemes of OS X 10.10.
- Corrected a problem where network activity items could not be created for ports combined via dynamic link aggregation. The settings now offer all physical network ports, no matter if they have an active communication address.
I had been using Temperature Monitor and when that became unavailable, I decided to try System Monitor. I like it very much. It has already helped me figure out what's going on a couple of times when there seemed to be more activity than I thought there should be. The only quibble about the app is the fact that to use it full out, it takes up a great deal of precious MenuBar real estate on my 15 inch MBP. However, this led me to another app (Bartender, not in the App Store) to manage the MenuBar, and now that that's installed, I can have my realtime System Monitor display and easily access my other MenuBar items too.
One other point: early on, I found it instructive to run Activity Monitor while also looking at the System Monitor display. I think doing that increases one's understanding of just what one is looking at. (Once you've done that for a few minutes, you won't need to do it again.)
monitor my stuff
This app is really great have been using this app for a few years. I like the fact I can see what is going on with my mac by just looking up to menu bar. I love the temp and internet part because I can see how well my internet is doing and also with temp it allows me to see if I have a run away app. very nice keep up the good work on this app. A must buy if you care about your computer.
This app gives you so much info at a glance it has become a must have for me.
