Description

Note: tChess is a "universal binary" and is designed for the iPhone AND iPad, so you don't have to buy two different apps.

tChess has support for all of Apple's technologies and devices: Game Center to play real-time or turn-based games online with your friends and family, iCloud, AirPrint, dual-core chips, Retina displays, and the iPhone 5's 4" display.

tChess Pro is the high-quality, critically acclaimed chess game with the richest features for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It's perfect for every player:

Beginners:
Not everybody is a chess master! Most chess games are too strong or just make random mistakes at easier levels. tChess Pro has unique algorithms to simulate human opponents.

Experts:
tChess Pro has a top-tier chess engine. (Over 380 ELO points stronger than Caissa Chess.)

Enthusiasts:
tChess Pro's Analysis Mode is like having a chess master in your pocket. You can get the engine's "expert opinion" about any game or position in real-time: which side is winning, and the best sequence of moves. Just like a professional desktop chess package.

More key features:
- Perfect for 1- or 2-player games
- Strong computer opponent
- Play against any ELO rating from 500 to 2500
- Integrated "Learn Chess" e-book app (Apple Staff Favorite!)
- Opening Library feature lets you explore chess opening theory as you play
- PGN Database feature lets you download and view PGN files
- Support for 3-stage time controls with Fischer increments
- Position Editor to enter positions from books, newspapers, etc.
- Save and load games; export them in standard PGN format
- Use the Profile feature to play rated games against the computer and track your progress

tChess Pro is developed by Tom Kerrigan, author of the TSCP and Stobor chess engines.

Plays super realistic games

This plays amazingly real games even at 1000 and especially at 1050 level. There are moments when I am surprised at the exchange of ideas happening. I have been learning to play the Kings Indian defense and, surprisingly, this app will actually play various lines of KID and gives me invaluable practice playing the KID. It also plays many different openings and through practice I have found that I can play KID against many of them (I can even play it against 1.e4 sometimes, but must be careful and respond to threats appropriately). I was way too intimidated to play online bc it had been a while since I had played. Also, I never got what openings are or how one is supposed to play them. After researching openings, reading part of play the KID, and putting this to use in this app, I feel I am ready to play online now that I have some practice and a basic opening under my belt. I play this app almost every day and I know I can improve even just playing this. PS: playing an opening like the KID against the app made my games literally 100x more fun. I had no idea chess could be so fun. My advice to anyone out there is to learn a fun opening like the KID, it is so much more fun to play against the app with this opening!

Fantastic

I'm extremely pleased with t Chess Pro, it was well worth the small amount of funds. Everyone is looking for different things in a chess program, so keep your needs in mind when looking over he feature list. The AI is very strong, far stronger than I will ever need and capable of the other programs I've put it up against. At the same time, it isn't too tough because of the dynamic learning system. As you play through ranked games, it will estimate a rating for you and adjust as you succeed and fail. Rather than randomly inserting obviously dumb mistakes to simulate lower ratings, it seems to gradually play better, realistically, as you improve. As a straight teaching tool, it is lacking. It will not really tell you how to play better, but it does teach through play. Otherwise, features like Png support and an openings book just increase the value. The ratings speak for themselves, this is a very fine program.

Been Great So Far For Studying

I bought this app as in order to use as an analysis board for studying book diagrams. My iPad now functions as a board that I can take with me along with books. It's been wonderful for this. I can save games and load .pgn games as well as .pgn collections, such that all of the games in a book can be added instantly. This didn't seem to me to be that difficult of a programming feat which makes me wonder why it was so difficult to find an app that does so. This is the only one I've found that does this. The ability to store these files in the cloud means I can use my iPhone as well.

I have not played the computer nor used any of the training/learning software in the app as it was not what I bought it for.

Regarding the price, it is indeed priced higher than most apps out there but does everything I want it to do and will get a lot of use for a long time. For $8 that's a decent deal in my book.

The only option I wish this had is the ability to change the background color of the 2D board. The two-tone blue, shown in the pictures, is the only color available. I'd love to see a green, brown, and maybe a few more color schemes. However I got used to the blue relatively quickly.
