Watch the demonstration video here ▶

• Click on your screen's edge to take a note.
• Document file types are conventional RTF (Rich Text) and RTFD (Rich Text with images). Not proprietary format. (This application uses "Comment" property in RTF. )
• Documents folder can be any folder in your home folder.
• Supports versioning. OSX keeps documents' previous versions. (This app does not contain version browser. Please use TextEdit to browse version files.)
• The app has built-in short term backup system. Changes made to notes will be kept for 3 days in the backup folder (you can open it from the preferences). For more comprehensive backup system, we recommend other application.
• Customisable with original themes created in Tab Notes Theme Editor:

* This application is a "menu bar app". The application icon does not appear in "Dock". Instead it appears in main menu bar. You can change preferences from the icon in the main menu bar.

Q. The application does not open. It does't work.
A. This app is a menu bar app. App icon does not appear in Dock. It is designed to serve you discreetly without occupying Dock space. The application icon appears in the right part of the main menu bar at the top of the screen.

Q. Tab did not appear. Where can I add my notes?
A. Just click the screen edge. Please see the video

Q. It would not let me delete the app.

Q. Isn't there any "Preferences" for this app?
A. Yes there are. The menu icon of this app is located in the right part of the main menu bar at the top of the screen. You can choose this app's Preferences here.

Q. How do I change themes or background colour?
A. Press and hold Control key then click a tab. Contextual menu appears. (Depending on device configurations, right-click on mouse or two finger click on track pad may be used.)

Does what it says

Tab Notes does keep my notes handy and tidy. Eliminates that notepad I used to keep next to my laptop. Now I don’t have to worry about reading my bad handwriting in low light or switching to a notes application…which is better, but not as easy as having my Tab Note right on the edge of my screen where I can always find them. So far I’ve only used the three free notes, but I’m seeing now that it might be worth buying the full version… for extra notes refer to often. I’ve postponed upgrading because it seems pricey. The developer I think would sell more at a lower cost and ultimately have more revenue. I gave it 4 stars only because I’d rather not have the notes pop up 'accidentally' when my pointer inadvertently touches them. I wouldn’t mind having to click to avoid this. And it has been EXCEEDINGLY annoying to be constantly asked to review the app. I don’t normally review but clicking that option didn’t stop it from bugging me. If I were a different sort of person, I might have retaliated by giving one star. But I’ll be honest and stick with 4 stars. 5/6/17 Update: Thanks to the developer for responding. Problem solved: I went to Preferences and Unchecked "Open on mouse-over". However, I got a new request for a review today. I’ve never had problems saving settings in App Store apps. Dunno what else to do.

Developer Response

Hi Marcia,

Thank you for using Tab Notes free, and for taking time to write a review.

To avoid having notes “pop up accidentally”, you can modify your settings in several ways. For example, you can use a special key combination to activate a note. Please have a look to see if there is a suitable method for you.

As for asking to write a review…
This is very weird. The application asks you to write a review only once per version. The last update was 18 months ago. So it should have been seen only once in the last 1 and 1/2 years. Also, the dialogue should never appear again whether if you chose to write a review or not.

Do you have any other issue on saving, for example, not being able to save default settings in this app or any other Mac App Store apps? There may be a file access issue with your storage that prevents apps storing changes.

Hi again Marcia,

Your settings are clearly not being saved. Probably the settings file’s permission may be corrupted.
"Open on mouse-over” is OFF as a default setting. This also makes us think your app might have an issue.

You could do this…

If you are using OS before El Capitan, do repair disk permission using Disk Utility app.

Quit Tab Notes Free first, then choose “Go" -> “Go to Folder...” menu item in Finder and copy & paste this location

This file might be corrupt or your disk’s permission prevents the app to save default settings.

Deleting this file might help. This will reset the application's settings, but not your documents. (But be careful that the application may fail to locate your documents folder because your app may not to be able to save default settings including documents folder location. You may need to change document folder location manually so that the application can find them.)

After doing this the application should ask you to write a review only once. (To be technical, you can open this file by an editor app that can edit “plist” then set “MNAppRatingDisplayed” flag to “true” in order not to display the review request for this version.)

Easy to Handle, Fun to Use!

Tab Notes Free is fun in a lot of ways! It’s a great way for organization, planning out events, and many more! It’s a great application to use, and doesn’t take up much space. However, the one irritating is the fact that every time you click near the edge of your homescreen, and click, which I do often because many of my applications line the screen, asks me if I want the premium version because I cannot have more then three Tab Notes.

Now I understand that you should advertise your full eighteen dollar tab notes and all that, but it gets VERY annoying that it happens over ten times a day. I’d appreciate if there was just a “Never ask this again” button, as is common on many ads or security questions.

Any ~ great app, would so recommend :)

This is great!

I don’t write reviews, literally, I never write reviews. This is the first review I’ve ever written, and it is so worth it. I have an organisation problem, and I use notes on my mac and iphone, and I write in my notebook, but the issue is: I never open them to check my notes. So the fact that this is write there on my screen no matter what I’m doing is great. Even when the little creature thing is showing from the side, it’s a constant reminder that I have some work to do. The limit is 3 notes (for free), but so far I have not needed more than 3. Plus, you can resize notes to fit in a list of things. Maybe when I need more I’ll purchase the premium. I seriously love this.
