Do you want to play an electric guitar and a piano at the same time? What about choosing the electrifying buzz of a drill and blending it into the soothing tone of a human voice? Jordan Rudess and Kevin Chartier’s Tachyon gives you all these options and more.
From the makers of the award winning app, MorphWiz, comes a new creation that allows images and sound to become one as they magically blend under your fingertips. Each note you play is an individual expression, allowing independent control of pitch and tone far beyond that of traditional instruments.
Most instruments only allow you to play one sound at a time, but with Tachyon, you can seamlessly blend between any two sounds as you slide your fingers up and down the screen.
The visual experience of Tachyon is just as mesmerizing. As you move along the playing surface, a field of twinkling stars morphs into the shape of your selected instrument, allowing a direct correlation between sight and sound.
As described by Jordan Rudess, “Tachyon is simple to use and at the same time offers a unique musical expressive power. The sonic core of the app is a custom crafted sound set from my personal library, encompassing sounds as familiar as those you would find in your home toolbox, and as exclusive as the ones I use on tour with Dream Theater."
Whether you’re a seasoned musician looking for a next generation instrument to further express your creativity, or just a regular Joe browsing the app store looking for a fun and simple purchase that will delight the whole family, Tachyon is the app for you!
The simplicity is quite endearing, if somewhat limiting to more experienced programmers of synths. However when one just wants to start jamming with an expressive instrument, Tachyon should not be overlooked. What it may lack in visual color and deep programming, it more than makes up in fast, responsive playing and quick access to the most important of parameters. A fine balance is achieved for keeping the screen area fairly uncluttered to allow manipulations of said parameters while playing a passage pad or shredding a wicked solo. The sound qualities are fairly good if ever so slightly on the cheesy side; however the excellent delay and decent chorus help improve some of the lackluster.
The morphing between two sounds keeps things interesting and being able to adjust the octave settings independently can provide wonderful feedback-like expression to one's playing. I also love the ability to switch between glide and hard notes in the midst of a solo run. Glide mode allows finger-wobble-vibrato...something I've dreamed of since my early days with synths. Real happy it is included here.
A lot more could be commented on here, but I can't wait to get back to playing some more Tachyon.
Huge bang for the buck.
Not bad at all!
Pretty cool app even though I was expecting more by way of ACP and WAV exporting, but after playing with Tachyon for a couple of hours I actually can appreciate it for what it has to offer. The U.I. is spot on and the sounds are pretty good, but what I like most is the feature to Morp between two selected sounds while playing live. I even lined Tachyon in to Reason 6 and gave it a test drive through some Reason effects Racks and the results were amazing!
When it comes to Tachyon I have to say that the price is right for what this app does. Even though it may not be no SampleWiz, it most defintiely is a handy music app to have just for playing around, or for the serious musician to get some stuff done.
Good for what it advertises.
Not the best considering what it could be. Before my review sullies your opinion, let me say this: for 2 bucks, buy it. Pretty great sounds, blending sounds cool, ETC.
Now, for what it could be:
You guys are wizdom music! Morphwiz, Samplewiz, Geosynth! It seems... Below you, to put out such a simple app. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but it seems like there's so much more you could do. Many of the sounds are similar, not much tweakability. The ideal thing would be to base it on an internal synth, and allow tweakage of that. You could create much more interesting blends that way! At the very least, please add different-er voices.
