Good English Port but Gimmicky...
This is a good example of Taiwanese Mahjong who's biggest unique characteristics for me are the 16 tile hands and the progressive scoring bonus for winning consecutively as the dealer.
I'm enjoying the game so far and even though all of the screenshots are in Chinese, it does play nicely in English (comeplete with a Wesernized tile set) with very few examples of weak translations as is often the case of a game catering primarily to an Asian audience. It was free but I have to imagine there eventually will be some sort of IAP offered to unlock the rest (but I haven't gotten that far yet). I think my only whine at this point is that while I appreciate it throwing in some twists with each city, I hope they don't use timed turns in all of them. The second stage, Seoul, only allows you 8 seconds to make your moves and I'm afriad it might only get shorter as the game continues which, to me, is a weak way to make the AI appear more challenging. I do, however, love the game's very detailed statistics separate for each City (even tracking which specialty hands you've achieved per city) and stuff like your quickest number of turns in a hand to achieve a Mahjong.
True majiang, multiple levels to build your skills in and challenge yourself. A great game. The drawbacks are minuscule.
The only things I'd like to see is 1) that a Chi or Peng that you've been offered doesn't get yanked in a fraction of a second when another player has a chi or peng - this looks like a technical problem, and 2) I'd like to see an explanation of the betting.
I'm glad there's finally a decent Mahjong game for the iPad! Despite the images and description, rest assured that there is a setting for English speakers. The instructions are clear. My only comment is that it is easy to select the wrong tile to throw out sometimes... Also there are cases when I want to chow and the computer isn't letting me, but that may be me not reading the rules completely...
