Inspired by Les, Talk Assist is an alternative speech aid that provides a voice for people who cannot speak for themselves.
Using Text to Speech technology, anything you type in will be spoken out loud for others to hear. Phrases will be saved to a history, and favorite phrases can be bookmarked for regular use.

Used to work
As an SLP I really need my voice. A couple of times when I lost my voice to illness where talking set off coughing fits I dug out this app to communicate with my students in therapy. Later I used it to trial as a possible AAC venue with an autistic student. Now when I have a vocal chord polyp which requires minimally a month on vocal rest, this app crashes when I try to delete or edit old messages on both the iPad and iPhone. It also won't save new ones. Too bad, used to be great when I needed it. Screen moved to landscape, messages saved. True, the mechanical male robot voice could be better. But it used to be the best free text to speech app I had. Wish an update would be released for iOS 8.
This app is too quiet on the speaker even with the volume all of the way up. App is alright though. UPDATE: This app is a lot better now because two other apps that I payed money for have less features and put out the same voice like TextToSpeech. That app has no history feature, no save feature and no support for screen rotation. Those features I mentioned are in this app. This app is also a better value than those two paid apps.
Yikes, the robotic voice is terrible even for a robot and there's no way to change it and it's pretty scary for younger kids. There are much better apps out there; try them first.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
