The Boy Scout Handbook
A Guide to Adventure, A Guidebook for Life
A Handbook for the Past and the Future
You hold in your hands a century of Scouting. In addition to being a reference for
the youth of Scouting’s second century, this 12th edition of the Boy Scout Handbook
also honors the heritage of Scouts who came before you. It combines art from
previous editions with modern illustrations, photographs, and information.
As you browse through this app, take note of the elements that make it special.
- Quotes from past and present BSA leaders and literature will inspire you and remind you that Scouting’s values are timeless.
- Vintage artwork from Handbooks past will help you understand how Scouting skills have changed very little from a century ago.
- “In This Chapter” boxes will give you an idea of what you can expect, as well as a quick index when you’re looking for specific information.
- Photography is essential to a beautiful book. Three of the five professional photographers who worked on this edition are Eagle Scouts; one was a Life Scout and now has worked professionally for the BSA for 30 years; and the fifth is an adult Scouter!

-General app optimization
Needs bug fixes and updates!
It's nice to have The Boy Scout Handbook on my iPhone. It would be nicer if it didn't continually crash! The text on the standard page view is usually too small to read without having to zoom-in and fidget with the device. So the "Text Only" view was a great idea, but it's not without its quirks. When in the "Text Only" view, if you don't scroll the page just right or if you tap the screen, the application crashes. When you restart the application, it resumes at a different, but previously view location in the book. Which brings me to my final grievance. Why isn't there a search parameter that allows you to enter a page number and jump directly to that page? Developers, please consider my complaints and submit bug fixes and updates.
Just a Searchable PDF Please.
Cramming a book into an app is really not a good Idea. I recommend eliminating the cost of app development and simply making the book available as a PDF. I know you are concerned you will loose income on the sale of the books, but if that is the case then the boy scout program has failed at teaching Honesty. I am sure you could increase the price of your shirts or something to make up the difference. I put 10 hours a week to make this program work and I don't get a dime. The least you could do is let me have the book in a form I could use it. I am visually impaired and use standard screen readers to provide text to speech functionality. These readers can organize the book and you can develop links just the same as the app but they don't crash because they are designed properly.
As an Eagle Scout looking to pass on what I’ve learned to my daughters, particularly around knife safety and knots, I immediately went to downloading this app since, coming from the BSA, I considered it would be official, current and relevant. It is absolutely non-functional on iOS 8.1. It’s unconscionable to offer this app for $10 when it’s not even making use of the space for an iPhone 5. It’s clearly not been maintained. Very disappointed in the BSA for having their name associated with this mess and it’s a $10 I regret having spent vs. buying the actual handbook.
