Overheats iPad, Drains the Battery, and Constantly Crashes with Latest iOS

MariettaWalker

After waiting months for an update to this horrible app, just deleted it and cancelled my subscription.

Used this horrible latest app update for a few weeks now and as most other people point out, the constant ad streaming completely destroys the experience. But there's something else. The app rapidly drains the battery and overheats my iPad! Both my wife and I have commented how hot the iPad is after about an hour using this app. I've found that if I download the ePaper first, then put iPad into airplane mode, then press Read; the iPad runs a lot cooler and battery life is a lot longer. Plus the continuous ads are eliminated even though the bottom 20% of display is blank. No doubt that the heat and battery drain is due to the constant ad streaming and constant processing associated with handling nonstop ad traffic that shouldn't be there in the first place for a paid subscription service. A horrible, terrible, downgrade after using a much better app for last couple of years. This one is likely to cause AJC to lose customers if not quickly addressed.

Version 4 is terrible

June 9 Update: with the latest update to iOS (ver 11.4), the app now crashes when zooming in on certain pages, such as comics.

First, this is a PAID subscription. We see the ads in the online version of the paper - fine. But now these flashing ads at the bottom of the screen is over the top! They have to go.
Second, navigation is worse. Yes, you swipe to turn the page, but it is worse than before. On the last version, there were translucent buttons you could press to turn the page.
Third, the previous version had a feature where you touch an article it would zoom that article to page-width, which was nice. Now it launches a new window with the article and even more ads. You can still pinch and zoom, but less effective.
Fourth, many of the jump links to the rest of the article on another page do not work. This may be a content creation issue and not the app, but annoying.
Finally, with the toolbar across the top and the ad panel at the bottom, the amount of screen space used is un-acceptable.

They will need to make some changes or I, like others, will be forced to look elsewhere for my paper. Interesting hat I just got my annual renewal in the mail.

Lowering my former two-star review

Many months ago I wrote a two star review. This update? ONE STAR. I wrote customer care AGAIN and they said they’re working with the vendor to resolve the constant and daily crashing, especially when reading the comics. Now there isn’t a day when it won’t crash the paper when enlarging or moving the page, leading us to find our way back to where we left off each time. Clearing the cache in iPad’s Safari in Settings and reinstalling does nothing. Lately, it’s begun crashing on news pages as well. After this long, the fact that they don’t announce the problem publicly and give us updates, leaves us to think that our devices might be faulty, and that is unforgivable. Joyless experience, trying to read the paper each day.
