Lauded by Wired, The New York Times, Gizmodo, Fast Company, and many others, The Atavist offers a new kind of nonfiction storytelling.
Each monthly issue contains one nonfiction, multimedia story, longer than a magazine article but shorter than a book, that can be usually read in an hour or less. Each is reported and written by skillful, award-winning nonfiction authors. Each comes with a full audiobook, video, maps, timelines, interactive graphics, and much more.
Download The Atavist app for free, and then buy each issue individually inside the app or subscribe for 3 months. Half of our royalties go directly to the writers.
Individual stories are available for $2.99. A three month subscription, for $6.99, gives you access to all new and past issues.
From the tale of a bar in Baghdad, to the story of a ship's sinking and the crew's struggle to survive, to a writer’s journey through his own family’s past, to the incredible account of one of the world’s most audacious heists, The Atavist offers original true stories that you won’t find anywhere else.
*Audiobook versions read by the author; alternate between reading and listening
*Audio, video, photo, and animation chapters that work seamlessly within the story
*Smart timelines, maps, interactive graphics, and character profiles that help keep you oriented in the story but don't spoil future plot twists
*A visual table of contents and full search for each story
*Musical soundtracks, audio and video clips, primary documents, and a host of other elements built directly into the story

What's New in Version 1.17
- Audio autoplay and looping bugfix.
Great writing interesting presentation good-not-super app wrapping it
Excellent content, the app is pretty nice to use. There does seem to be a unexpected crash on closing story issue with my ipad air and the current version though - hence 4 not 5 stars.
Overall, The top sub I consider a bargain for the great writing and interesting presentation.
The Atavist is terrific, app a tad slow, but worth it. Content is marvelous and I enjoy the option of listening to the story in the authors voice - music nicely compliments the piece also. Worth noting that I ended up here via Lonform.
Auto scrolling issue?
I'm really enjoying the author reading the story but the auto scroll is too fast. The text is over a paragraph ahead of her voice. Very distracting.
