Love the concept of the app but it’s frustrating that there is no notification bubble/red dot like many of not all other apps have. I don’t want to miss out on things that are shared or posted when live gets busy, and that little notification symbol is a great reminder/eye catcher... I feel this would be a simple addition and improvement to the application ... perhaps we can consider implementing this in a near future update?!
It's good, but needs some modernizing to make it great.
I've been a part of three different churches due to moving, and all of them have used The City. It's easy to see why it's popular. Everything the modern church needs out of a good online networking solution is here. Groups, volunteer needs, prayer lists... ACS has paid attention to the needs of pastors and staff and delivered a product that does it all.
My issues, as a designer, are: the interface feels very dated, the UX is clunky and bloated, and it doesn't take advantage of current smartphone technology. It feels like it's stuck in 2010. Sure, 2010 will do, but I think that simplification and modernization will bring the app from "good" to "great". Streamline navigation. Strip down the UI. Build in Touch ID authentication. These are just some examples. I like The City, I want it to succeed and continue to meet the needs of the modern church, so I'm rooting for the designers and developers to keep on making this app a staple on the smartphones of many churchgoers!
As I said, I'm a designer and a frequent user of The City; I've toyed with the idea of coming up with some mockups with ideas for modernizing the UX and UI. Not to be that annoying reviewer with a sense of ownership that goes a little overboard, but I'd be interested in helping in that way somehow.
Ready For Prime Time...
As a consistent user of TheCity at our church I have anxiously awaited an app that improved on TheCity's mobile website. So as soon as I caught wind of this app I downloaded it. The app launches nicely, but only performs one function beyond that point. I could view my Friends from within the app and that's it. It won't download ANY other data from our instance of TheCity. I understand being in beta but this is just silly. This app is very nearly worthless in this current version...
***UPDATE*** I received an email within a couple of days from TheCity product development team (Joe) with a fix more the problem I was having. It's related to using the 24 hour time function. They have a true fix that will be in the next release. I'm adjusting my rating to 4-stars for excellent product support & follow-up. The app works great when I change my clock to the 12 hour setting. I anxiously await the new release with 24 hour clock compatibility.
