DREADFUL to use - but we love the idea and content !!

Don't get us wrong - there is SO much that is absolutely wonderful about this incredible app - BUT, ever since it's release and in subsequent updates, the H Channel hasn't been able to accomplish a fix for a number of major flaws. Simply put, it crashes at an alarming rate - when trying to download data rich content and memory rich material (ie: the higher resolution downloads of the newspaper scans for the daily content). Even on it's primary splash / opening page - the app crashes... This isn't a function of the users' wifi or connected interface - these are bugs in the application that have never been resolved for those of us (and family members) using this since close to launch. It's a shame, but perhaps this will be resolved in an upcoming 'legacy' version....?
So wonderful, but so frustrating to USE everyday!!! Our kids have totally turned off this application, but we'll stick with it as we're truly interested in the history and content.
Keep with it, though... Through the frustrating interface, this is a wonderful project with content, images, and sources not often found in the ubiquitous 'popular' history format!

This used to be a awesome program

This program once had great potential. For the first year and a half I have had no issues with this program. On the occasions that I had a question for the developers I received a timely response. Not any more. One of the biggest selling points for me was the inclusion of diary entries from various people on both sides of the conflict. I have been fascinated to read about the war from the perspective of a high placed clerk in the Confederate War Department. The complete devotion and blind loyalty of some average Confederates is fascinating. It is odd to see someone have such faith in the Southern cause and be so utterly convinced of a CSA victory even as the country is falling apart around them.

A majority of the diary eateries have been stuck on January 31, 1864. I have sent 3 inquiries to the feedback department. On two occasions the only contact I have had was a email informing me that my issue had been resolved and that my ticket was being closed. In the past fee months I have noticed that the content has become less consistent. I agree with a previous reviewer that it appears as if the original developer is no longer involved with the upkeep of this program. More is the pity. I will gladly adjust my review accordingly when the issue is addressed.

Good but could be better

As a history buff, I do read this every day. I especially enjoy the journals, which give a sense of shifting emotions as the war unfolds. But, since the whole point is to let us follow the war chronologically, I wish the content were better planned and edited toward that goal. For instance, right now the "featured story" is about the Peninsula Campaign -- nice overview, but I needed that information a year ago when the Peninsula Campaign was happening in the chronology and journals. Similarly, excerpts from the great memoirs, such as Grant's, lag the chronology. As for the journals and letters, it would be nice if long gaps were explained-- for example, Mary Chestnut is arguably the most famous and quoted journal writers of the war, yet we haven't heard from her in months now: why not, and when will she rejoin the story? And, as others have noted, there is a growing sloppiness in the editing, such as the red boxes that indicate active journals that day.
