Audio Edition is Unusable

I use the app to listen to the audio edition of this weekly publication. Unfortunately, removing the ability to listen at preferred speed (2x) has caused me to abandon the app completely. The only way to listen now is at “normal” speed which sounds like someone on ether trying to “mansplain” the topic to me. It’s truly awful.

Pro tip: get the podcast link from your account page and listen in your favorite podcast app at your favorite speed. The podcast app remembers your preferred speed and doesn’t make you swipe left from an advertiser’s splash page every time you open the app. Less clicks, better experience. I abandoned the app when the ability to select preferred audio speed was removed and am writing this now because I can’t get “The World in 2018” in my podcast app so came back to the app to see if it was fixed. It’s not and I so I’m forced to listen at dumb speed.

To the “The Economist” team behind the app: come on folks, fix this terrible user experience. You’ve lost a user and my eyeballs on your ads because you’ve made a worse experience than for me than older versions of your app. I love the “The Economist” for its excellent reporting and finger on the pulse of current events. Plus, it gives me a great window into the future. Unfortunately, the app does not live up to the quality of the publication. Rather than a window to the future, it feels like a step backwards.

Terrible Update

Update: how does this app have 5 star average?! It's absolutely terrible. Since my initial post it has gotten worse in bugginess. Leaving and returning requires starting all over (it loses your place) and now you cannot increase the speed of audio at all. Default to 1X is actually more like .5X and painfully slow to listen to. I hate to say it but I'm left with no choice but to cancel my subscription. Awful, awful app.

Once again the Economist had succeeded in making a bad app worse. You can no longer see how long each article has left from the lock screen. Or what's playing form inside the app. Leaving the app (not closing, just minimizing) often results in having to reopen or even redownload the the latest issue. If you're listening at 1.5x speed it will default to 1. In addition to all that, the Economist employs clueless voice actors to read the audio version. Get ready for mispronounced words that any educated person would easily know and goofy transitions where they don't understand the content of what they are reading. For a business periodical it has the vibe of being built by your grandparents. The economist has a hundred plus year history. That doesn't mean the app needs to make it feel like it's built back then too.

It’s sad when updates are not improvements

The newspaper is still a wonderful source of news. But the most recent versions of this app have a major glitch: every time you leave the app and come back, it loses your place, and takes you back to the index. Usually this just means you have to remember which article you had been reading, but it’s quite an annoying “improvement” over the older versions that brought you back to the same article where you left.

A rather more annoying “improvement” is that at random, you are now forced to re-download issues you were already reading. This is unacceptably slow, and quite annoyingly loses your place completely. In an issue with 40+ articles, you are back to page 1 and have to find which article you were reading. It’s like a magazine that automatically shuts itself and loses your place, every time that you put it down.

Still love the content, but absolutely not loving the updated app.
