The Florida Times-Union, the First Coast's No. 1 source of news and information, offers a sleek, intuitive app for your iPhone and iPad.
The app is free to download and run; however, a digital membership is required to access its content. Those with All-Access Membership can log in when prompted.
With the Florida Times-Union app, you can:
• Download the day's Jacksonville news and read it on your smartphone or tablet, online or offline.
• Get breaking news throughout the day.
• Take advantage of "plus" content, such as videos, slideshows and Web links.
• Email a story to a friend or share it on a variety of social media outlets.

Some improvements...but overall needs a lot of work
To be fair, the old app had a lot of problems and desperately needed upgrades and improvements. The previous app wouldn't allow you to turn the page unless the page you were on finished loading. This app fixed that.
Now you don't have to wait for the paper to download. It is there and ready to go. Now we have ad inserts. Now we can print. And best feature of all is that the ability to turn the page through left and right translucent buttons has been added. We also are able to view the paper in replica form (which is my favorite) and as articles like on the website.
However, where this app fails miserably is in ease of use and intrusiveness of ads. When I double touch an article to read just that article a pop up ad appears ON TOP OF the article I'm trying to read and there is no way to close or get rid of it. How about wrapping the text around the ad?!?! Another time I accidentally clicked on an ad and it enlarged to full page. The only problem was that there was no back button I could see and no way to close the ad to get back to the paper. I had to close and reboot the app. And how do I look at previous issues of the paper?
The menu buttons are also confusing and not intuitive. The gear icon led me to believe I could adjust my preferences and customize the app to my liking, but it only allowed a change of view (replica,etc.). The view change option is already featured prominently on the menu bar. The question mark button was was confusing. Why not just call it a help button. Only it doesn't help. Just brings up a few pointers that don't address anything you really need help with. When icons are used as buttons you shouldn't have to guess what they do. You should know by looking at them or be able to hover near them to get an explanation. The print button seems to be the only intuitive button. I hope this review can help the developers make the needed improvements.
Worst upgrade in the history of upgrades
The previous version was great. So many problems with this app now and half the time I can't even get the latest edition to load.
The previous app was acceptable. This version is so bad it had to be done by a competitor. It is the most aggravating and frustrating app I have come across inciting high blood pressure, bulging blood vessels, loud epitaphs and utter anger and hostility. These morons obviously don't read reviews and are part of a customer No service company. One wonders why the newspapers are failing. Not really. Now we can watch them screw up their digital business.
