The Independent, London, UK named "The Gentle Alarm" one of the ten best alarm clocks worldwide and the best alarm clock app.
(2. November 2010)
Gentle Alarm is the first sleep phase alarm clock that will reliably and gently wake you in your light sleep phase.
Developed by a clinical neurologist and a worldwide first, The Gentle Alarm is an adaptive and easy to use sleep cycle alarm clock for iPhone and iPod touch. It serves to reduce stress and cortisol levels. Higher and more prolonged levels of cortisol in the bloodstream have been shown to have negative effects, such as: weight gain, overweight, impaired cognitive performance, depression, suppressed thyroid function and blood sugar imbalances, decreased bone density, decrease in skeletal muscle tissue mass and power, skeletal muscle wasting, high blood pressure, lowered immunity, decreased testosterone levels, impaired erectile function, menstrual abnormalities, fatigue, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, headache, migraine, fibromyalgia, muscle pain and poor digestion. The skin can present with symptoms such as oily skin, acne, eczema, and roughness. Elevated cortisol also decreases the skin's ability to regenerate leading to wrinkles, sagging, and impaired wound healing. Elevated cortisol in pregnant mothers influences cortisol metabolism during the baby's crucial development periods.
The "cortisol awakening response" is an increase in cortisol levels occurring after awakening in the morning.
To keep cortisol levels healthy and under control, Clinical Neurologist Dr. Hans Joerg Stuerenburg, M.D., Ph.D. developed an innovative adaptive stress free alarm clock, “The Gentle Alarm” (patent pending).
Unlike the hitherto existing so-called "sleep phase alarm clocks", which need wristband motion sensors, agitation sensors or EEG headbands in order to work correctly, Gentle Alarm does not require unnecessary or cumbersome implements. Also not having to put your iPhone on your bed avoids dropping it on the floor during nights.
Additionally, conventional devices often fail in practice and are unable to reliably identify the light sleep phase. The wake-up often occurs ahead of the desired wake-up time, thus forfeiting valuable sleep time. Now there's an end of it!
Gentle Alarm is a new generation, reliable sleep phase alarm clock. It readjusts to your personal wake-up needs and keeps learning about you with every use. Additionally, Gentle Alarm will lead you smoothly from the deep sleep phase or dream phase (REM sleep) into the light sleep phase without you even noticing. A mere few days of use will give you your very own individual wake-up procedure. Gentle Alarm will become your very own, individual alarm clock, perfectly attuned to you (and only you).
Put an end to waking up tired. Avoid aggravating, lingering dream retrospection. Instead, have Gentle Alarm wake you up smoothly and you'll rise refreshed and in shape. Give yourself a cutting edge. You will perceive improvement in performance, you'll work more focused, you will look better and improve your mood and health significantly.
Go to bed without fear and indulge in the certainty that you will awake inside your light sleep phase by an individual, smooth wake-up procedure. Harness the extra dash, creativeness and creativity unleashed by this practical yet dreamlike invention. Your partner will be delighted to be able to sleep on in case you need to get up before her/him.

It does the job
I got this app in a giveaway, so I didn't need to pay $4. :) I'm not quite sure if it geuinely calculates your sleep rhythm or if it's just the placebo effect, but I like it. I haven't felt groggy ever since I bought it. (and, contrary to the advice, I've been getting less than the optimal 8 hours of sleep)
Let me describe to you how this app works. It plays an alarm that gradually increase in volume. (unfortunately, you can't set the alarm sound, so you're stuck with the unpleasant but energizing buzzing noise.) Once it reaches the lowest volume threshold, you'll wake up. In this sense, I guess it adapts to everyone's needs since everyone has a different volume threshold. That is pretty much the gist of it. Again, I use it everyday, and apparently it works.
In conclusion. Does it work? Yes. Based on pure empirical science? Maybe not, but again, it works. :) Is it worth the money? Well, I guess that depends on you. To reiterate for the third time, it works. However, maybe you already have a very agreeable alarm set up. In that case, it's not worth the money. On the other hand, if you don't have an alarm set up of any kind and desperately need one, I suggest this. I hope this review is more informative than the automatic naysayers.
Gentle alarm love
I have used it for only three days. The first morning the emergency backup went off. Horrible. BUT I was up way ahead of my normal morning routine by 40 minutes!!! No alarm nonsense or anxiety
The second two mornings I awoke to the soft gentle Tibetan chime as it floated into my sleep state and I woke up feeling better than I have EVER felt waking up. No more buzzers for me
One thing, if it's not working for you, you might want to have your hearing checked. I'm not sure it calibrates for hearing levels... But I could be wrong.
I never want to wake up to the backup buzzer again but knowing it's there is a comfort...and a motivator. I love this app... And four bucks isn't breaking my bank account. I've spent plenty on commercial, traditional alarms which got me up....but not happily like this one! Thanks German scientist! (lol)
Joke app. Wow. I never did use this as my alarm because I kept waking up to the obnoxious light coming from my phone, as the app has to be open in order to work, and the phone won't go into sleep mode while the app is running. I spent $4 on this because a friend recommended it (I think she meant another app with a similar name, it couldn't possibly have been this one). Deleted it after one night. Disgusted.
