The New Yorker Magazine

D. Hill

The New Yorker Magazine is an application mostly designed for current subscribers but it has a little something for those who are not. Users familiar with other Condé Nast magazine applications such as GQ, Vanity Fair and Wired will be familiar with the layout where all issues made available are presented in a shelf section allowing you to purchase individually if a non subscriber or log in and simply download if you are a subscriber. Also included is a FAQ section. The application can both serve as a way to read the whole issues digitally or as a compliment with interactive content you can't get in print issues. For non subscribers there is a limited free preview available for the latest issue where you can read a few short story articles but none of the more famous long form content. These articles can be shared with others as well as read. The New Yorker Magazine is a well designed streamlined application that makes it easy for subscribers to manage their library on the go and non subscribers to get a taste of the monthly magazine or purchase issues they may be interested in.

I have been a subscriber for years. Used to be able to look at same day short articles as well as look at magazine articles, scroll through sections. It was sort of a mix of the current magazine and daily articles. But now the app is only long form articles and I have to use New Yorker today app for current events. That app is plain silly. Just a long scroll down of articles unlike being able to choose sections before. I called customer service and talked to two people who both professed to never have experienced the previous app. Does customer care even read the mag using the mobile app? Used to be a daily read. No more. Too hard to use and no I don't want to navigate across three different apps, mag, today, goings on to see what I used to see in one app. Can't begin to express my disappointment and frustration w this experience.

Great content. Awful app

The one star rating has nothing to do with the content produced by the New Yorker. The magazine and the writers they publish are wonderful. The app, however, has been consistently buggy. I've had to delete and reinstall it several times when issues come up. The latest issue was that all issues were no longer free, I had to pay to download them even though my subscription was valid for another few months. After wasting my time with customer support for awhile I finally just reinstalled the app. I of course had to reset my password because who remembers passwords anymore and once I logged in the issues were restored. All this trouble seemingly out of nowhere and for nothing.
