“The Sailor’s Dream is a novella, a folk EP, and an art installation wrapped into one app ... It’s an inspired example of what storytelling can be in the 21st century and the way modern technology can shine new light on well-worn conventions.” - A.V. Club
“Its lonely, bittersweet tale—told in a wonderfully unique mix of approaches—is the best storytelling I've ever played on my iPad.” - Kotaku
“It's an experience that's entirely about the narrative, but one uniquely built for smartphones and tablets. The peaceful visuals, the wonderful music, the sharp writing, and the simple interactive toys all go towards creating an atmosphere and telling a story.” - The Verge
“... you can easily wander for hours through The Sailor’s Dream making music, playing it not like a game, but as an instrument ... If you are looking for a space to contemplate, a place to linger, a path to walk in patient consideration, you will find yourself at home in The Sailor’s Dream for quite some time.” - Kill Screen
“A world-in-miniature put in the palm of your hands, which rewards you for your exploration of it with sensory delight. And perhaps most powerfully of all, pushes you to feel deeply for its inhabitants.” - Gamezebo
What's New in Version 1.1
Ahoy Sailors, this update fixes the bug some have been experiencing when running the game in zoomed view on iPhone 6.
A really, really, really misunderstood game.
Yes, I picked this game up a long time ago, yes I heard it takes time, yes I tried it and promptly deleted it after trying to figure out what the heck I was playing. I understand you. And because I understand you, I must insist that you don’t drop this game. I picked it up again with the intent of not playing a game, but watching experiences unfold before me and exploring the mind of this “sailor"…that changed everything. From the beautiful visual imagery down to the intriguing memories displayed in vivid text…I really fell in love with this up. There’s so much to discover and ample clues to discover it with. All the memories can be explored in any order and in any direction (you explore places)…but they are still seamlessly connected. The game itself, takes about a week to unfold…and this is why: TIME IS RELEVANT. The hours you open it, the day you open it, it is all relevant to the progression. You have to collect memories and songs, and only then will you wake up from this sailor’s dreams. It’s haunting yet beautiful, optimistic yet sad, colorful yet jaded…it can be quite an emotional experience if you let it. This game won’t be for everyone, but if you’re like me… you may have dropped it at first, but perhaps instead of making the game approach us, we should approach it on its own terms.
Amazing app that takes time to play, literally!
Naysayers, please read this review! When I first considered this app, I read a lot of reviews spewing hate because the content fell short and they were done in under an hour. After giving the app a shot regardless, I too found out that I hit a wall. The next day I decided to mess around again on the app and found out that the game CONTINUES. To the reviewers who say they are disappointed with lack of content, they obviously gave no more time than the only day they decided to play it. You are supposed to spend at least one week, unlocking content as each day goes by. It furthers the story, which is amazing, and by the end you have gotten what you were looking for in terms of story. If you pay close attention you will realize everything is as it should be. I honestly think the people who gave a bad review solely on the fact that the app lacks content or is too short, were too impatient or stupid to realize that the app is meant to be taken slow. If you are a fan of visual arts or reading, I implore you to try out this app. Even when I feel I've run dry after my daily Sailor's Dream fix, I still keep coming back simply because the app is amazing.
Simogo is the Bee's Knees!
My wife and I have played Year Walk and Device 6. We thoroughly enjoyed both experiences. We are only partway through The Sailor's Dream, but the story is very intriguing so far. While it may not be what most people consider a "game" we felt compelled to write this review in order to set the record straight. Without spoiling anything, we wanted to let people know that in order to finish The Sailor's Dream, you will need to spend at least one week with it. There's no way to "Finish it in an hour." You will need to come back daily to uncover the entire story. People who expect a quick and mindless "game" will be disappointed. If you're looking for more than that, we believe you will enjoy The Sailor's Dream. My wife and I are patiently waiting for, and looking forward to, each new portion of the story that will unfold over the next few days. We're looking forward to seeing what Simogo does next!
