Makes me hope Lucasarts gets all their SCUMM games on the iPhone!
This game is remarkable. They took a classic game, polished it up with new graphics and voice actors for every role, and remade all the music to sound rich and real (as opposed to the Soundblaster MIDI tunes we used to get). The interface is not really all that different from the original, except that the screen is now the mouse/touchpad as well. The result is a game that is an excellent example of what can be done on the iPhone OS. My iPod touch will get hours of use thanks to this game alone! It also provides a lot of incentive for me to beg Lucasarts to release their other SCUMM games-- Improved graphics or not-- on the iPhone. I would slap down the cash for an iPod touch version of Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, and especially Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, among others. I really hope Lucasarts classics (and other point-and-click adventures) get released, because this is a worthy platform for them. Bravo to Lucasarts for not only bringing back the classic, but bringing it back new & improved, with a lot of love and care. They really impressed me with this release.
Loses save games
The game itself is of course nostalgic - I'm surprised and slightly disturbed by how much I remember word for word - and the new voice acting is kind of nice. It's difficult to really experience on the phone with the limited input system - sure, you can get by, but it's so tedious to navigate around and interact with things that you'll find yourself not even bothering to check out all the side gags and little items of interest. As a game itself it'd be pretty brutally savaged if released today - the writing isn't really that witty, the pacing is tediously slow, and there's really not that much actually to it. Plus I think we're beyond the "use X on Y for all possible permutations of X and Y" game play of yonder years. Even though I remember the game well I still had to consult a walkthrough at certain times, to figure out what on earth to do next. In summary I'd casually recommend it, mostly to people who've played it before and remember it fondly... BUT, it doesn't react well to interrupts. For example, I was a third of the way through when the Clock app's alarm went off. Monkey Island hung. After force quiting it and relaunching, it had thrown out my saved games. Gone, just gone. Remember that tedium I mentioned just before? Multiply it.
Almost worth it
The only major problem with the game is with the control, which many other reviewers have already pointed out. But just to recap, the control is awkward because you must drag a cursor around instead of point and click like you would in almost any other iPhone app. It may not seem like too big of a deal at first until you spend 5 seconds dragging the cursor from one side of the room to another and click again just to go there when you should be able to just click on your destination. There are several other minor issues but they are hardly worth mentioning.
Aside from the control issue, the game itself is fun, assuming you've never played it. I bought this game instantly just because I was a big fan of Monkey Island when I was younger and thought reliving the storyline would be fun. I was wrong. I barely got started on the "trial" before I got bored. This was probably due partially to the control issue. But if you have never played this game, I'm sure it would be much more enjoyable to go through the storyline for the first time.
2 stars taken off for the awkward control, 1 star taken off for unejoyable content (for someone who's already played this game).
