Wonderful publication, terrible new app

I tried to put the bugs and annoyances aside but there are too many. The app is slow and bug ridden. After 4 years I have to say goodbye to one of my favorite reads. I will not even finish our my yearly subscription which is seven months left. Best of luck to the developers.

As with another poster, I would like to start with The Week is a fantastic publication. And up until this new version of the app, always enjoyed the digital experience. Unfortunately, this new app is unusable. I subscribe to the print + digital version. While logged in I am unable to download any previous issue, although I’ve attempted to Restore Purchases. (I’ve been a subscriber for three years.). The font resizing does not work (as it is defaulting to the smallest font.). And any attempts to scroll through pages brings up a progress/activity wheel which lags the reading / page turning experience a number of seconds. I am using a 2nd generation 12.9” iPad Pro, so I quite confident it is not the hardware. Until these and other smaller issues are corrected, I cannot recommend this app.

App has room for improvement, but is getting better

I wish there were two votes to rank the app - the content is a solid five star, the app - as you can clearly read in other reviews - has had a slow start. If you’d asked me a week ago it would have been a 1 star, but with the updates have come improvement.

There are still things on my wish list - being able to highlight again is top on the list. Sometimes it’s nice to either save the document in Evernote or GoodNotes or look up the definition of the word. I enjoyed the maps that would designate where the article “Across the World” was referring, and I still have challenges with the last article read.

The programming team has already solved one of my biggest peeves after the rollout: banner size and asking me if I want to restore past purchases. This gives me confidence in saying that the app, while not perfect, is working its way towards perfection.

Unbelievably bad update.

The update is so incredibly bad. Here are some things I am no longer able to do:

I cannot read the 10 things I need I need to know offline. This was key to me as a business traveler as I would update the article list before boarding and would have it available during flight. Nope, no more. Update: the functionality of this is 50/50. Sometimes the option to read the “latest news” is there, other times it is not.

Another thing I really enjoyed was the ability to share articles with friends and family instantly. Well, the new update eliminates that feature too. What was a great advertisement to friends now is a link to sell them the mag - a forced sales pitch. Great job.

The new format is obnoxious at the opening screen. Everything is clunky and loads slowly. The pictures in various articles, some you can see full screen when you tap on them, but others, you cannot. Absolutely awful.

Sometimes I am able to “turn/flip” pages, other times I am only able if I scroll to top of article - who approved the release of this app in such a state?!

I honestly will be ending my iPad subscription and will revert to the paper copy from my local library. The new update is that bad.

If so please delete your app and re-download it and then it should load your content normally. In regards to sharing articles, this is pending some licensing agreements and additional coding that’s to be implemented this summer on the app’s backend. Since we license most of our content, we have to be careful on how easily content can be disseminated via the app. We’re working with the developers on a work around where it’d direct the readers you shared content with to the web version that would grant them access to that specific item.
