WildLab Bird engages learners with the basics of bird identification. Along with associated curricula and educational activities found on the WildLab.org Web site, WildLab Bird is a powerful way to see the environment in a whole new way. The application includes photographs, audio, and range maps for over 200 species of birds.
The app helps learners through a process of elimination that leads to a correct identification. Users select a habitat, then the shape most similar to the bird sighted. From a list, users select the bird most similar to the one they see, using photographs, range maps, and songs and calls for each species. The application saves each sighting with location, habitat, and notes, and sightings are also available in the user’s WildLab.org account online.
1.) A map, with both user and eBird hotspots.
2.) A quick entry view to enter birds you already know; from this page you can enter any of 2055 species of birds.
3.) Facebook Connect to share sightings with others through your social network.
4.) Twitter integration, creating a real-time database of sightings tagged with #wildlab.
5.) Built-in email functionality to share your sightings with birding groups and listserves.
6.) The ability to create Events and have others join them for collaborative birding.
7.) A sightings list, so if there is loss of service, users can upload the sighting later.

What's New in Version 1.7.0
Minor fixes for iOS 4.1.
This provides good functionality (including mapping and birdsong clips) but there are several shortcomings. Namely, there is no search, there is an unavoidable 'terrain' category that makes it harder to find birds, you can't use a photo from the camera roll making it impossible to use other camera apps, there is only one photo per bird, and it isn't retina-display capable. Hopefully this app is being consistently developed and these features will be made available. And yes, more birds please!!!
Missing species from list?
I'm having trouble finding the birds I see on walks. Is this an east coast app? The concept is great. The process is really good, as well. But there are missing birds/data in each of ecosystems displayed. Many of our birds live between habitats or in many of the shown habitats.
An example would be the bluebird which nest on the edge of the forrest and hunt for insect in meadows.
Is there an update in the future or is my version not working correctly.
this is one of my favorite apps. my family and I have lived in the country for six years now and have been able to identify most of our winged little friends thanks to this app. I absolutely love the bird song function.
