Description
Theodolite HD is a multi-function viewfinder that combines a compass, two-axis inclinometer, rangefinder, GPS, map, nav calculator, and geo-overlay photo/movie camera into one indispensable app. Theodolite was one of the very first augmented reality apps when it was released in 2009, and it’s been downloaded and used by millions of customers since then. Uses are endless, and the app is great for land measurements, outdoor sports, sightseeing, navigation, and finding your way around. Theodolite is a pro grade app and is used extensively by surveyors, geologists, architects, engineers, competitive sportsmen, first responders, military personnel, and search and rescue workers around the world.
Theodolite lets you take data-overlay camera images and movies, with 2X-8X digital zoom and fast image processing. You can overlay geographical data, date, time, author/company info, and project notes directly on photos and movies for later reference. The same data is written into the metadata record of images, making the image files self-contained image+data records. Third-party apps can tap into Theodolite's advanced camera functions with a new camera sharing feature.
View your current position on the built in map, with optional new offline Outdoors maps that include topo contours (feet or meters), roads, trails, landmarks, campgrounds, ski lifts, and more. Live map markers continually update distance/heading relative to the current location and also show wayfinding info on the main camera screen. You can draw polygons on the map to mark things like property boundaries and trails, and import/export polygon data via KML.
Share map markers and nav calculator points with other users of Theodolite via text messages or e-mail. This powerful capability opens up a wide range of collaborative uses which include team land surveying, accident investigations, spotting of wild fires, triangulation of landmarks, and advanced tactical observation and targeting operations.
Theodolite includes features for serious users like a reference angle mode, nav calculator, map marker import/export, data logging with CSV and KML export (via e-mail or iCloud Drive), system-wide clipboard integration, percent grade display, mil compass readout, optical rangefinders (including a mil-based reticle, sniper-style stadiametric graphs, and a variable 4X-24X scope), and colored lens filters to improve use in dark conditions and preserve night vision.
Theodolite can provide location in military grid reference system (MGRS) coordinates, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates, British/Irish National Grids, US National Grid, Maidenhead locator system, and six latitude/longitude formats. Optional US State Plane coordinates include SPCS27 and SPCS83 zones covering all US States. The optional Datum Pack adds over 230 geodetic datums to the app to improve position computation from GPS data, covering regions and countries on all continents around the world.
With an optional in-app purchase to enable team tracking, you can share location with up to 20 people on Theodolite's map. Team tracking was developed in conjunction with search and rescue experts to offer a good balance between simplicity and performance.
Theodolite has been shown in Apple Keynotes, featured on the App Store, and has been a #1 selling Navigation app in App Stores around the world. Since its introduction in 2009, Theodolite has defined augmented reality navigation. The app continually introduces new technologies, pushing the limits of iOS app development and taking advantage of new hardware capabilities.
Find out why Apple named Theodolite one of the most amazing apps available and showed it being used to explore the Great Wall of China. Where will you take it on your next adventure?
Theodolite HD requires an iPad (see the regular “Theodolite” app for use on iPhone and iPod Touch).
What's New
Version 6.1.1
Added an option for sequential naming/numbering of photo files in Preferences > Camera Options. Filenames will be of the format "THnnnnnn.JPG" where nnnnnn is an internal Theodolite photo sequence number. This will avoid the issue PC users were seeing with random alphanumeric filenames when importing photos, and let Mac users choose a sequential file name format if they prefer. This is now the default option, but users can change back to the more descriptive prefix/timestamp naming of files introduced with Theodolite 6.1. See the user manual for more info on photo file naming.
The map will now center and zoom on an imported polygon, and polygons now show a marker on the first point to aid visibility when zoomed out.
Added ability to import map marker and polygon KML files from the app's local documents folder (accessible from the iOS 11 Files app or iTunes on a Mac/PC). This will provide an import path for people who don't use iCloud Drive.
Ratings and Reviews
Great App, but offline maps are very expensive
I've always liked this app for site survey of local obscura and the like.
Since they added the offline map function I thought it would be a great hiking add (like a GPS). I like using my iPad as a GPS even though I know its big. the large screen is really nice for looking at the local terrain.
The capability to download offline maps is very attractive so I bought 100,000 tile credits for $15 to download maps for hiking. I defined the area of one local park/hiking are to download and found that 100,000 tiles was not enough! I did a test and found I need about 10 tiles just to cover an area the size of my house and yard.
A fine app but does not make dollars and sense for the average hiker. For $100 I can buy detailed maps for my GPS that cover NM, AZ, UT, and CO. At Theodolite prices, $100 would buy offline maps for about 1 county
Theodolite
I have had this app for several years and they keep upgrading it and making it even better. We have used it many times. Example making gold mine boundaries, or finding property lines, or getting info for earth excavation, or seeing if something is horizontal. It has proved very accurate and well worth keeping on the pad/phone. I can not say enough about my joy using this app. Makes many jibes very easy.
Pretty good for what it is
I'm not I. The habit of writing reviews , in fact I think this is my second one . The app is pretty good for what it is , however I have one underlying complaint the in app purchases chiefly buying tiles . The state plane coordinates I can understand, the amount of tiles necessary to do even the simplest task is
Too outrageous. Cmon guys . Really .
Yes I understand it takes time and money to produce a worthwhile app but you could up the amount of tiles needed to cover a decent survey grid .then I would give you 5 stars .
Developer Response
You might be trying to setup a region that's too large to be practical for a tiled map that has multiple zoom levels. Each zoom level increase requires 4X the number of tiles of the previous zoom level, and there are about 20 zoom levels depending on the device you have. When yo define a region, the app downloads what you see and then all higher zoom levels. So do the math -- it can get out of hand fast if you're not careful. The tile system is setup to be economical for typical customer usage on small regions, and in most cases, the 5,000 tile starter pack will cover your needs for a long time. If you're seeing excessive tile requirements, it probably means you're trying to capture too large of a region for this type of map architecture. You could try breaking up into smaller regions (for instance, bracket around trails or properties with multiple smaller maps instead of capturing the whole thing at once).
