HERE’S HOW THINGS WORKS
If you’re new to Things, this is the basic workflow:
1. Collect Your Thoughts
Get things off your mind quickly: no matter what app you’re in, a keyboard shortcut instantly reveals Quick Entry. Type your thoughts and save them to the Inbox. Or just talk to Siri on any device (“Remind me to...”) and import from Reminders.
2. Get Organized
Create a project for each of your goals, then add the steps to reach them. For clarity, add structure with headings. Then group your projects by areas of responsibility, such as “Family”, “Work”, or “Health”. Review these regularly to stay on top of things.
3. Plan Your Time
See your calendar events alongside your to-dos and plan your time effectively. Create repeating to-dos for things you do every few days, weeks, or months – Things will remind you on the right day.
4. Make the Most of Your Day
Every morning, grab a coffee and prepare your list for “Today”: review previously planned to-dos and make quick decisions on what to tackle. Pick some more steps from your projects and then get going. The Today list is the only place you’ll need to look for the rest of the day.
5. Customize Your Workflow
Use tags to categorize your to-dos or add context. For example, tag places like “Office” or “Home”, or tag all your “Errands”, or everything you’re working on with “Kate”. You can easily find everything you’ve tagged via filtering or search.
HERE’S WHY WE THINK YOU’LL LOVE THINGS
1. It stays out of your way.
As you start using Things, you’ll quickly notice how seamlessly all the features fit together to give you an uncluttered, focused experience. There are no unnecessary frills. No pointless gimmicks or useless controls. In fact, you’ll hardly notice the app – it’s just you and your to-dos.
2. Everything revolves around your to-dos.
In Things, each of your to-dos are special. In a list, they simply show a checkbox and the title of your to-do. But when you open them, they extend into a beautiful white piece of paper that’s ready to hold your thoughts. Additional details (checklists, tags, reminders, deadline) are nicely tucked away in the corner until you need them.
3. It’s got a touch of magic.
Things removes friction in magical ways. As an example, take Type Travel, a remarkable new way to navigate your lists. You just start typing where you want to go – the name of any project, area, or to-do – and instantly you’re transported there. Or look at the Natural Date Input – just type “Tom(orrow)”, “Sat(urday)”, “in fou(r days)”, “Au(gust 1)”., and it will jump to all the right conclusions.
4. It’s got all the power of macOS.
Things is fully integrated with all the latest macOS technologies: Touch Bar, Today Widget, Calendars, Siri & Reminders, Share Extension, Handoff, and AppleScript.
5. And much more...

What's New in Version 3.0.1
Things has been completely rebuilt, with excellent new features and a beautiful new design. Here’s what’s new on the Mac:
• ALL-NEW DESIGN
How it looks, how it works, and how it feels – Things has been completely redesigned, with more clarity, improved workflows, better structure, and delightful animations. It’s a to-do list like no other.
• PROJECT HEADINGS
It’s so much easier to handle your projects now that you can break them up with headings. Use them to create categories, milestones, or whatever you need – just give each one a name and drag your to-dos underneath. Instantly you’ve got a nice, clean structure for your list, and the plan becomes perfectly clear.
• CHECKLISTS
Some things take several steps to complete but don’t require a full-blown project. Now you can use Checklists to break down the finer details of a to-do. Use them for shopping lists, when packing your bag for a trip, or to detail a process at work so you won’t miss a critical step.
• CALENDAR INTEGRATION
Display calendar events alongside your to-dos and stay on top of your schedule. They will show at the top of your Today list, and for each day in Upcoming, where you plan the week ahead.
• PLAN YOUR DAY – WITH TODAY AND THIS EVENING
Once you’ve made your plan, the Today list is your go-to place for all daily activities. Calendar events now display at the top, giving an outline of your schedule. Your to-dos follow, with a discrete section at the bottom called This Evening for things you’ll get to later in the day.
• PLAN YOUR WEEK – WITH UPCOMING
Plan your week ahead with the new Upcoming list. It shows everything on your agenda for the coming days: scheduled to-dos, repeating to-dos, deadlines, and calendar events. A quick peek at this list is all it takes to stay on top of your schedule.
• WHEN SELECTOR
Working with dates is super easy with the new When selector. Use it to quickly put to-dos in your Today list, schedule them for later, or put them on hold in Someday.
• NATURAL LANGUAGE RECOGNITION
The When Selector has a magical ingredient: Natural Language Recognition. It smartly detects what you’re typing to work out what you mean... “Tom(orrow)”, “Sat(urday)”, “in fou(r days)”, “Au(gust 1)”. As you can see, it jumps to all the right conclusions.
• REMINDERS
One of Things’ most-requested features is now here: time-based reminders! You can add a reminder by typing (natural language recognition), or just speak to Siri. For those to-dos you absolutely cannot miss, reminders will give you peace of mind.
• TYPE TRAVEL
Search and navigation in Things is now extremely fast, with Type Travel. All you need to do is start typing – the name of a list, to-do, or tag – and instantly you’re taken there. It’s magic!
• APP-WIDE TAG FILTERS
Just start typing the name of any tag to pull up an app-wide filter. It shows all items with that tag across all your projects and areas. It’s a fantastically versatile way to view your to-dos.
• THE NEW SIDEBAR
Projects in the sidebar are now nested under areas to keep everything tidy. Each one has a new progress indicator to show you how close you are to achieving your goal.
• SLIM MODE
Collapse your sidebar with a two-finger swipe to cut out distractions and focus on your work. This is great when you’re working in Split View, or if you just need more room on your screen.
• MULTIPLE WINDOWS
You can now open multiple projects in their own windows and drag to-dos back and forth between them to organize with ease. Or use them across multiple displays, desktop spaces, or split views – whatever suits your personal workflow.
• AND MUCH MORE
The all-new Things is also available for iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch (sold separately). Go to our website to learn more: thingsapp.com

Powerful Simplified To Do List
I have tried quite a few combination apps with tasks AND calendaring functions. Most had a lot of other features added in as well that I just didn’t use. I have always liked the Tasks to show on the day that I want them completed. I like the way that Things brings in the Calendar events and shows the tasks assiged to that day. You can’t edit the Calendar events, but that is what the Calendar is for. The “Someday” tag is great for me wanting to keep an item handy to relook at, but not show up day to day on my list, and not get done. The Today, and Upcoming links are handy as well. I also like the fact that I have the ability to create additional sub levels of task organization, using the Areas & Headings levels. I have had no issues with app synching between iOS and MacOS apps.
One of the features I have always looked forward to, is having connectivity with other apps. I just found out this evening that I can send email links to Things 3 Tasks from AirMail (Apple Mail doesn’t have this feature, though maybe other 3rd party apps do).. When saved to Things, there is a link that takes me right back to the linked email with all the information in it. GREAT feature!! There are a lot of times I want to reference the email information provided and be able to followup on it from a Task Manager.
First time spending money on a to-do app
I love to-do lists. I don’t LIKE them, I LOVE them. And I need them to keep me on-track in this fast-paced world. When people ask me to do something, I don’t rely on my brain to remember - I write it down in my to-do list app. I have used many apps, but my app du jour was Todoist. It is a great app and I only ever used the free version. There is something about a subscription model that I don’t like. I would rather pay once than pay over and over again to use an app. That is just the way I feel. When Things 3 came out, I saw the chance to pay for something and own it and since it is brand new I can maximize my money spent by going the longest without updating by getting in on it brand new. I ran a desktop trial and within a couple of days, I bought the iPad and iPhone versions as well as the desktop version.
This app can do far more than I use it for, but it works perfectly for my life and work. I am a realtor and I create projects based on deals and populate them with what needs to be completed and when. Then I spend my day in the “Today” section to see what I need to do each day. It is a great app and I love it. Todoist was a great app too, but I prefer Things 3 and I like being able to pay once and own it. This is my first time using Things, and it fits me like a glove.
Coming from OmniFocus
This is pretty good software. My only gripe is it really doesn’t have the power to do what I want it to do sometimes. For instance, my work and private life are completely separate. Sometimes I may have personal stuff I want to do today that would be embarrassing / inappropriate / irrelevant to show at work. That being said, it’s helpful to look at “Today” for my work project… but I can’t look at Today items only for work. In that vein, Things 3 greatly lacks the power of other todo applications… there’s just no getting around it. That being said, I’ll continue using Things 3… the only thing I would say to the developer is this:
I totally get it. Simplicity is king in this arena, and no one wants you to evolve into OmniFocus. That being said, there is STILL a lot of power under the hood here. It would be nice to have some more power in certain areas. For instance, imagine if you command clicked on Today + a project or area, and by doing that it filters. That would be a nice power user addition that wouldn’t muck up the interface. For now, I’m just going to have todos like “chores” and “body grooming" on my main work screen if I want to show the items I need to complete today.
