Some terrible bugs, but not insurmountable
The bad news: Offline listening appears to be easy to break. I’m not sure what governs it yet, but I also got in a state where they wouldn’t play, and I couldn’t delete them. I was traveling overseas, so this made for an extraordinarily frustrating plane ride. Really need to catch whatever check isn’t working here, so the next update fixes this.
The good news: It’s mostly solvable. Just uninstall the app and reinstall, you’ll be out of the infinite loop. I haven’t replicated the bug the second time around, so it may have been update-related (i.e. old files sticking around, violating some newer convention).
Why I’m writing: Some of these negative reviews seem to misunderstand the app, or be mistaking unintuitive UI for a lack of features. Common complaints:
1) Descriptions get cut off: No, the “Read more” text is just not showing. Tap on any description. A window will pop up showing you the full one.
2) Only get the last five episodes: No, you just aren’t getting the others presented to you in the home screen. Search and categories will show you everything. Today I listened to four episodes from varying years with no issue.
3) No way to rewind / navigate: Tap the top right red icon while the episode is playing. You’ll get a screen that’s remarkably similar to any other podcast app, complete with a “jump 10 seconds in the past” button. It’s fine. It works.
I love the show, but the app is buggy
I have been listening to this show avidly for several years, and while I love the app and how you can listen to all the past shows, recently it has been crashing a lot. When I did the iOS 8 update, it seemed to crash slightly less, but still it's crashing. It also wouldn't let me listen to several episodes for a while. I 100% recommended this app because there's nothing like this show out there, but I wish they could get the bugs out of the app. The old version was less buggy and seemed to have an easier interface, and sometimes I just wish they would revert back. Still, having access to all the past episodes makes listening to TAL on the show-specific app better than on something like Stitcher, which only lets you access the most recent programs.
This app does everything I needed to(Mark listened, rewind/fast forward 10/15?sec, download episodes, etc). It has so many this American life shows, literally hundreds, I never get bored. Compared to the Radiolab app the This American Life app is basically god. I love radiolab, but wow is that app horrible. I got radiolab before this American life and that was a mistake. Radiolab crashes all. the. time. I downloaded this American life about 4 weeks ago and it has only crashed once.
Definitely download. Even if you won't use it but you like This American Life, make a purchase to support them. Content content content, they have the best content.
