Addicting but also irritating
I've played Threes off and on for more than a year. I love it but I've got issues. I play with no sound. The comments the numbers make are grating. A new game takes too long to become challenging. It's tedious merging the tiles until you've accumulated high enough totals to feel like it's interesting. Then, a couple false moves and it's all over and you are back in the basement again. Is this game supposed to be played like chess, in which you must plot your moves well in advance? It doesn't present itself as such. Finally, when you've done poorly and have a low score, the steps you have to go through to end the game and start a new one -- in which totaling and recording your score require multiple taps -- always feels so humiliating. For all its success, Threes could do a lot more to improve its users' experience.
Addictive & Wonderful
When thinking of what makes a game great so many things rush into your head. (At least in MY head.) However, for Threes you can push that all aside for the simplicity of: Once you start, you can’t stop.
Oh sure, eventually you realize you’re late for work, or that you’ve been on the train too long and missed a stop. Then there’s the fact that you forget to cook and get rather anemic, oh and maybe your spouse leaves you because you’ve been playing too long. These are mere trifles. No, Threes is the thin thread I hold to in my new, unemployed, single, anemic existence. You should too. (Well, maybe not all those things.)
Great Game, But Hate GameCenter
The gamecenter spamming is unbearable in ios9. I wish there was a way to turn gamecenter interaction off completely. In older ios versions, I never used to log into gamecenter, and playing Threes was no problem. Now, after being bugged to death, I logged in while playing Three just to stop the delays in starting the game (who wants to wait 30 seconds every start of a five-minute quick game?) Now, the stupid thing still bugs me while playing Threes. I honestly thought about deleting the game just because of the gamecenter crud. The game is great, but needs to have a way to turn off gamecenter contacts. Play in airplane mode to minimize the annoyance.
