If this were primarily a puzzle game, I'd rate this game 5 stars. The story is interesting, and one really needs to ponder a bit as the puzzles offer a delightful challenge. The HOG aspects, however, are flawed. I've got my iPad on high lighting because the items are not only tiny (no zoom!), the background is far too dark to view as the game is not optimized for the new retinal displays. Also, you are asked to find items in a category, but are not provided with an outline or even an item's name: find 10 cooking utensils in a Chinese restaurant. Why isn't that cleaver selectable? A fork? Please. As was mentioned by others, correct taps are often not recognized, yet lightly brush against the hint button to adjust the iDevice and BOOM, hint used! Fortunately, (timed) bonus rounds of finding 2-3 identical items rewarded the player with more hints, and hints regenerated and increased throughout gameplay.
The spoken dialogue is often out of synch with the text, and no amount of volume adjustment will make the dialogue rise over a stage whisper. There is no game pause, so a quick switch to respond to a message will send the player back to the BFG screen to "play," then the developer's intro & menu screen to "play." That got old very quickly. The story, variety, and complexity of the puzzles kept me playing until the rather disappointing finale, however. A good game for non-HO fans if you buy it on sale.
OK so far--part II
OK, after one glitch at the deli where I had to reload, I finished with no other problems. The game was shorter than most, and ended with "to be continued." Bummer. I still think most of the puzzles were super easy, and they tended to do some of them over and over. The lack of zoom was really aggravating, especially when picking up teensy bits of things. I never realized this was based on a book, since I don't read that type of thing, but I could see from the getgo that it was supposed to mimic romance novels. So guys, beware! The story was amusing if you like that kind of thing, and as someone else said, it was a change from gloomy mansions. So, I would wait for it to go on sale and only purchase it if you like this blend of comic book/romance. And if you want to take a chance on the bug glitches!
I really enjoyed this game. I especially liked the switching of game and story scenes (and the interactive drawings, it really brought the tale to life). What's not to love about a sweet little romance? Its a little cheesy but makes the girl in me go yeeeeeeeeeh with giddiness😍. I did not have any trouble loading or playing this game, all functions were a go! I most definitely would like to see more games like this (light, fun, and a pinch of humor). I am proud that BigFish is putting out more lighthearted games instead of the dreary, haunting, and sad games they've been releasing.
I can't wait for the continuation to be released, I'd like to find out what happens to the two lovebirds.
