Description

Timebar stays out of your way while making sure you don't lose track of time. When you need it, it turns your entire menu bar into a subtle progress bar that slowly slides away.

When time's up, Timebar will let you know. Until then, stay focused on your stuff, not the timer.

What's New in Version 1.3.2

Bug fix: Timebar now correctly resumes your countdown after you sleep and wake your computer.

Best Visual Timer. Five Stars.

Great concept. It’s always there, but doesn’t take up any work space. The time bar drains from right to left along the menu bar. If you really want, it allows you to watch the numerical countdown too. I bought it to use for timed law school exams and like it so much that I use it for everyday studying to stay focused. It’s extremely easy to set the time, bar color, and message & sound when you are done. It takes 5 seconds to set and then you’re off.

This app has been updated for Yosemite. I notice they’ve adopted a translucent design for the menu that isn’t reflected in the pictures above. All the feautres are the same. In my experience, this app has never eaten CPU. On my 2011 Macbook air it runs between 1% to 3% CPU when the timer is on. I use the dark theme and it looks great. You can always change the color of the bar.

After a year of using Timebar, I consider this an essential productivity app. Highly recommended.

Obliterates your CPU performance when timing...

The fundamental flaw of this app is that it obliterates sytem performance while it’s running. Say you open up just TextEdit to write some text. Set a timer on Timebar and the app causes WindowServer to shoot up to 60-70% CPU utilization. You can feel the effect while you type: everything gets just laggy enough to get annoying. For such a simple application, it should not be hogging so much resources.

Fix that, and it’ll be an amazing app to help efficiency and timekeeping. Until then, this app quite literally slows you down.

Weak Yosemite support

I love this little app. I’ve found it the best way to set timers to keep myself motivated. Simple, clean design that stays out of my way, but just visible enough to keep me focused as I see the time slipping away.

One complaint: it needs an update to work better with Yosemite. It looks ugly, when using the dark menu bar. Also, and more alarmingly, editing the length of the timer with text no longer works!
