Timera is the closest thing to a time machine for your smartphone. It turns your phone into a time camera where you can stand in the shoes of past photographers and create amazing combinations of old photographs coupled with views from your camera. You can contribute to the timera community and add to the growing collection of old photos and geo tag them from your phone or on our site.
The app allows you to search based on your current location any old images that are nearby or search by hashtag for interesting photos anywhere in the world.
Timera creates a window in time to turn what would be ordinary photos into timeras (mashups of old and new), share them with your friends or post them to the public gallery.
Discover the history of places nearby and look at familiar places with new eyes. We hope you like this app and create interesting, haunting and funny timeras that you share with the community.
What's New in Version 3.2
App use to work until the USA server won't respond. Can't upload or delete photos. I sent four emails to app support, no response. I sent them a message with pictures on their Facebook, with no response. I don't know what has changed since October 31, but it's not working for the iPhone 6, ISO 9.1
-Easy to use.
-USA server doesn't respond.
-App support useless.
-Wish there was a way you could select every picture and delete, instead of selecting one, by one to delete.
-Location, when saving to your camera roll it doesn't have the right GPS.
Not Ready for real use
Update: Thought I would give Timera another try after more than a year and so updated it. First attempt to upload an old photo failed, repeatedly. Without being able to add old photos, it's useless.
Downgraded from 2 stars to 1 star. Too bad. It would have been really useful.
As a historian, I tried using Timera on my iPhone, iPad and PC to create beautiful photos mixing modern and historic views of the same location.
I had nothing but trouble and ended up with no worthwhile photos.
I tried using the iPhone to take a photo with the old photo faded in the display. I zoomed in to make sure the image matched then snapped the photo.
Other than adjusting which parts of the merged photo display as old or new, it is there very difficult to edit. I had trouble shifting or zooming one photo or the other to try to do fine adjustments.
When I tried to open my account on the iPad, the iPhone photo did not appear.
After saving a photo, it disappeared! Not in drafts or anywhere. Just gone!
Timera seems focused on forcing us to use hashtags and identify the location so our old photos can be found by travelers who then take their own snapshots and post on social media which then brings more users back to Timera.
I don't have a problem with this in general, but for the user who wants to take their old photos and create modern montages, the lack of good editing tools or files saving reliably makes it pretty worthless.
Especially needed is the ability to upload a modern photo, which it does not allow. You must go to the location and take a new photo to overlay on the old.
Without the ability to upload files and more editing features to allow for finer tuning of the end results, this app can only remain a casual thing for tourists who occasionally will happen to get a really nice photo.
With additional abilities and tools, this might one day be a really great tool for historians!
