Tactical comes to the IPad
I've been playing the rainbow six games since the first installments on pc and console, and I had my doubts, but shadow vanguard delivers. There are a few minor notes such as you can't quite 'clip' the sides of bad guys in hiding unless a decent portion is exposed, and the aim assistance when applicable can be slightly annoying for veteran gamers. Other than that, this game is rock solid and Clark approved. The graphics, frame rates, and response is superb, and the controls with the gyroscope offer a very unique and highly fine tuned experience. Even on the lowest sensitivity, it's incredibly responsive, adding wonderful realism. The environments, animations, and plentiful baddies are exquisitely rendered as well. Some new additions include a snake cam, colorful and sometimes useful conversations to eavesdrop, the stealth element of silencing the appropriate weapons at any time, ranks, and unlockables, making it a far cry from the same old song and dance with tangos, while preserving the best elements of the game. You also have multiple choices of approach in various parts of levels breaking the linear. I hope a second installment is created. If your looking for a solid Shooting experience combining all the best elements, including tactical counter-terror, or if your a previous rainbow six fan, this game is well worth the money.
Not perfect, but close
What Gameloft has managed to accomplish here is incredible. The game plays smooth (on iPad 3, anyway) and everything included just makes sense. Commanding your two teammates means that even if you're not an ace first-person shooter, you can still succeed in the game. In general, your squad behaves in a way that does not get them killed, something which many console games have yet to accomplish. The team command interface is also pretty slick, once you get used to it.
My only real gripe regards the controls, which can be tough to press at the time you want. First, the on-screen buttons, such as FIRE, only respond if you touch exactly on the button, which isn't large. I can understand why this is done, to help the player not randomly fire while trying to look around. Still, it would be nice if these buttons were customizable in size and position. Second, when dealing with doors, I sometimes try to use the snake cam to peer beneath when my teammates show up and suddenly I've ordered them into the room because the buttons have shifted positions.
Despite these relatively small issues, the game is really fantastic, with well thought-out levels, good team AI, decent voice acting, and a smart interface.
After comparing all the FPSes out there for IOS, I decided to get this one. I grudgingly payed the 7 bucks, and began playing. I finished the game within 3 days. I was suprised at the quality of the game. I especially loved the absense of the fps clichès like "disarm this bomb, and oh gosh, they somehow found out magically you are there, and sent 50 bad guys after you. The, they respawned all the enemies you thought you killed". The gameplay was challenging withiut being impossible, and the storyline was pretty good. The only issue I had was with multiplayer. It was extremely frustrating to spawn, and immedately be killed. Plus, there was no organisation of any sprt. At least give ine team a place to defend, and the the other team can attack. I also ahd several instances of spawning, and the enemy I killed just spawned right behind me, and killed me. The spawn pionts for the trams are the same, and it really detracts from the fun of multiplayer. the again, this is a 1.0 game, so there is room for improvement. Overall, an excellent game that I would recommend buying if you like FPSes that incorporate some kind of strategy into them.
